A Glimpse into Kyoto's Soul

Today, Maximilian and I embarked on a journey to witness the serene beauty of Kyoto's most iconic temples and gardens. It was a day filled with golden reflections, tranquil landscapes, and a deeper understanding of Japanese culture. Despite the chill of January, the city's spiritual heart radiated warmth and peace, offering a comforting embrace to every visitor.

Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. The aroma of freshly prepared Japanese breakfast filled the air, and we enjoyed a traditional meal that energized us for the day ahead. It was a delightful start, setting the tone for the cultural immersion we were about to experience. I always find that starting the day with local cuisine really helps me connect with the place I'm visiting.

Our first stop was the magnificent Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. The temple shimmered in the morning light, its golden facade reflecting brilliantly on the tranquil pond. It was a breathtaking sight, almost ethereal in its beauty. Despite the winter chill, the temple grounds were bustling with visitors, all eager to capture the perfect photograph of this iconic landmark. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence in the presence of such a stunning architectural masterpiece. Maximilian, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping away at every angle to capture the temple's radiant glow.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples, but in the serene atmosphere that permeates every corner of this ancient city.

Next, we ventured to Ryoan-ji Temple, famous for its enigmatic Zen rock garden. The garden, a rectangle of meticulously raked white gravel with fifteen carefully placed rocks, is a study in simplicity and harmony. As I sat on the viewing platform, contemplating the arrangement of the rocks, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The garden invites introspection and contemplation, a space to quiet the mind and find inner peace. Maximilian and I spent a good while discussing the possible meanings and interpretations of the garden, adding another layer of depth to our experience. The winter landscape added a certain stark beauty to the garden, emphasizing its minimalist design.

Afterward, we explored the grounds of Ryoan-ji, discovering the Kyoyo-chi Pond. I learned that in the past, this pond was also called the Oshidori Pond, oshidori being the Japanese word for mandarin ducks, which used to winter in the area. The pond offered a tranquil contrast to the starkness of the rock garden. The surrounding trees, though bare from winter, still held a certain charm, their branches reaching towards the sky like intricate sculptures.

Our third temple of the day was Ninna-ji Temple, a serene and sprawling complex with a rich history. Founded in 888 by the reigning emperor, Ninna-ji has a unique connection to the Imperial Family. We wandered through the temple grounds, admiring the elegant architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. Although the famous Omuro cherry trees were dormant in January, I could imagine their stunning beauty in spring. The temple's five-storied pagoda stood tall against the winter sky, a testament to the enduring legacy of Japanese craftsmanship.

For lunch, we decided to try Goichi Pizza, a local pizzeria known for its stone-oven baked pizzas. It was a delightful change of pace from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been enjoying. The pizza was delicious, with a perfectly chewy crust and flavorful toppings. It was a cozy and casual spot, popular with both locals and tourists. Maximilian was thrilled with the selection of craft beers, and we enjoyed a relaxing lunch, refueling for the afternoon ahead.

In the afternoon, we indulged in some retail therapy at Daimaru Kyoto Store. This department store is a shopper's paradise, offering everything from high-end fashion to local crafts and gourmet food. I was particularly drawn to the cosmetics section, where I stocked up on some Japanese skincare products. Maximilian, on the other hand, was fascinated by the gourmet grocery section, sampling local delicacies and picking up some beautifully packaged treats to take home. The store was bustling with shoppers, but the atmosphere was festive and cheerful.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Gion Mikaku for dinner. This restaurant is renowned for its Wagyu beef, and we were eager to experience the culinary delights it had to offer. The restaurant's elegant setting, overlooking the Shirakawa River, created a romantic ambiance. The Wagyu beef was exquisite, melting in our mouths with its rich, buttery flavor. It was a truly unforgettable dining experience, a perfect ending to a day of cultural exploration.

As we walked back to our hotel, hand in hand, I reflected on the day's experiences. Kyoto had captivated me with its beauty, its history, and its serene atmosphere. I felt a deeper connection to Japanese culture and a renewed appreciation for the simple things in life. I am so glad I get to share these experiences with Maximilian, as we both grow and learn together.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Nijo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. I'm excited to delve deeper into Kyoto's imperial history and explore the city's stunning gardens. I am also looking forward to trying Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION for dinner, and maybe capping off the night at The Common One Bar Kyoto. I am sure it will be another day filled with wonder and discovery.

Before I close out today's blog, I wanted to share one small travel mishap: I realized I forgot my portable phone charger! It's a rookie mistake, I know, but thankfully Maximilian had an extra. It's a good reminder to always double-check your essentials before heading out on a trip. Also, I really wish I had brought my Japanese phrasebook. I've been trying to use my German, but it's not exactly helpful here!

Until tomorrow, sayōnara from Kyoto!
