A Day of Discoveries in Kyoto
Today was a day of contrasts and discoveries, a blend of manicured landscapes, natural beauty, and spiritual awakening. Kyoto continues to surprise and enchant me with its ability to seamlessly weave together the imperial, the natural, and the divine. Maximilian and I set out with a sense of adventure, eager to explore the hidden corners of this captivating city.
Our first stop was the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. Securing a reservation for this place felt like winning a small lottery, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. The villa is a sprawling estate, divided into three distinct gardens, each more breathtaking than the last. As we walked through the meticulously designed landscapes, I couldn't help but marvel at the artistry and vision of Emperor Gomizunoo, who commissioned this masterpiece in the 17th century.

The winter scenery added a layer of tranquility to the experience. The bare branches of the trees reached towards the sky, creating intricate patterns against the soft, grey light. The ponds, though still, reflected the surrounding landscape like glass mirrors, enhancing the sense of serenity. I could almost imagine Emperor Gomizunoo strolling through these gardens, seeking solace from the political pressures of his time. It’s fascinating to think that functional rice paddies and aesthetic gardens existed side by side on the same plot.
Sometimes, the most profound beauty is found in the quiet corners of the world, away from the bustling crowds and the well-trodden paths.
Maximilian, ever the keen observer, pointed out the subtle details in the garden design – the way the paths curved to reveal unexpected vistas, the careful placement of each stone, and the harmonious blend of nature and artifice. It was a reminder that true beauty lies in the details, in the small, often overlooked elements that come together to create a cohesive whole. I made a mental note to try and incorporate some of these design principles into our own garden back in Heidelberg, perhaps with a touch of Puerto Rican flair, of course.
After the Imperial Villa, we headed to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, hoping to find a splash of color amidst the winter landscape. While the outdoor gardens were understandably subdued, the conservatory was a vibrant oasis of tropical and subtropical plants. The humid air was thick with the scent of exotic flowers, and the lush greenery provided a welcome contrast to the bare trees outside. We wandered through the different sections, marveling at the diversity of plant life from around the world. I was particularly fascinated by the orchids, their delicate blooms a testament to nature's artistry. Maximilian, with his data scientist's mind, was intrigued by the intricate patterns and structures of the various plants, seeing mathematical beauty in their design.

Before heading to our final destination, we stopped by Kyoto LOFT, a lifestyle store I had read about online. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs and perhaps a few items to brighten up our apartment in Heidelberg. The store was a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese design, from stylish stationery to innovative home goods. I picked up a few small gifts for friends and family, as well as a beautiful ceramic tea set for myself. Maximilian, surprisingly, was drawn to the stationery section, where he spent a good half-hour browsing the selection of high-quality pens and notebooks. He ended up buying a sleek, minimalist pen, declaring it the perfect tool for jotting down his data-driven insights.

As evening approached, we made our way to Kuramadera Temple, nestled in the mountains north of Kyoto. The journey itself was an adventure, a scenic train ride through the countryside, followed by a steep climb up the mountainside. The air was crisp and cold, and the silence was broken only by the sound of our footsteps and the occasional rustle of leaves. The temple is known as a mystical and spiritual place. As we ascended, I felt a sense of anticipation building within me, a feeling that we were about to enter a sacred space.

Kuramadera Temple was founded in the 8th century and is located on Mount Kurama. We opted for the hike, a relatively short but steep climb that immersed us in the surrounding nature. The path was lined with red lanterns, bridges, and streams, creating an enchanting atmosphere that felt conducive to meditation. By the time we reached the main temple buildings, perched on a terrace overlooking the wooded valley, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. The view was breathtaking, the city lights twinkling in the distance like a scattering of stars.
The temple itself was a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture, its intricate details and vibrant colors standing out against the dark green of the surrounding forest. We wandered through the temple grounds, taking in the sights and sounds, and feeling the spiritual energy of the place. I lit a stick of incense and offered a prayer for peace and happiness, both for myself and for the world. Maximilian, though not particularly religious, seemed equally moved by the experience, commenting on the sense of tranquility and the beauty of the natural surroundings. We even saw the Great Tengu statue at Kurama Station. In winter, apparently, you can see the rare sight of the Great Tengu covered in snow!
Today’s culinary experiences were just as diverse and enriching as our sightseeing. For breakfast, we indulged in the renowned tonkatsu at Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store. Despite its unassuming entrance, the restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to savor their crispy and juicy pork cutlets. I opted for the classic tonkatsu set, while Maximilian, ever the adventurous eater, chose the black pork version. Both were delicious, the perfect way to start a day of exploring.

Lunch was a more refined affair at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, an Italian restaurant set in a beautifully restored traditional building. The ambiance was elegant and serene, and the food was exquisite. I savored a delicate pasta dish with seasonal vegetables, while Maximilian opted for the grilled fish. The presentation was impeccable, each dish a work of art. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before our afternoon adventures.

For dinner, we ventured to Masayoshi Japanese Dining, a local gem known for its authentic and innovative cuisine. The restaurant was small and intimate, with a cozy atmosphere and a friendly staff. We opted for the omakase menu, trusting the chef to guide us through a culinary journey. Each dish was a revelation, a delicate balance of flavors and textures, showcasing the best of Japanese ingredients. From the fresh sashimi to the savory grilled fish, every bite was a delight. It was the perfect ending to a day of discovery, a celebration of Kyoto's rich culinary heritage. The service was wonderful, and the staff very attentive.
