Day 5: Golden Reflections and Zen Gardens: A Day of Kyoto's Spiritual Beauty
Discover Kyoto's serene beauty with visits to Kinkaku-ji and Ryoan-ji, savoring exquisite meals and exploring local shops with family.
A Day of Serenity and Splendor
Today was a day of exploring Kyoto's serene and spiritual side, a journey that took us through shimmering temples, tranquil gardens, and delightful culinary experiences. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to immerse myself in a culture so different from my own, to find peace in the unexpected, and to share these moments with my loved ones.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hafuu. I remember Lena raving about this place, and she was spot on. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the food was simply divine. Kai, of course, went for the most filling option on the menu, while Lena and I opted for something a little lighter. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures.

First on our list was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached, the sight of the temple shimmering in the sunlight took my breath away. The reflection in the pond was mesmerizing, creating a scene that felt like it was straight out of a painting. I couldn't help but think about the history of this place, how it had been rebuilt after being burned down, and how it still stood as a symbol of resilience and beauty. The weather was crisp, the air was clean, and the temple was just magnificent. Though January in Kyoto is generally cold, with temperatures averaging between 1°C and 9°C, we were fortunate to have a sunny day, making our visit all the more enjoyable. The short daylight hours meant we had to make the most of our time, but the clear skies offered a perfect backdrop for the golden pavilion.

The beauty of Kinkaku-ji isn't just in its golden exterior, but in the sense of peace it evokes, a reminder to find beauty in simplicity.
After soaking in the beauty of Kinkaku-ji, we made our way to Ryoan-ji, famous for its Zen garden. This was a completely different experience. The garden is deceptively simple – just rocks and gravel – but it invites contemplation and reflection. I found myself lost in thought, trying to decipher the meaning behind the arrangement of the rocks. Kai, surprisingly, was also captivated, though I suspect he was more interested in taking photos for his Instagram. Lena, ever the art enthusiast, appreciated the minimalist aesthetic and the way it encouraged a sense of inner peace. Despite the cold January air, with average temperatures between 1°C and 9°C, we lingered in the garden, appreciating the quiet solitude and the opportunity for introspection. The winter months can be less crowded, allowing for a more personal experience with the temple and its surroundings.

For lunch, we decided to treat ourselves to French Dining Top of Kyoto. This restaurant is located on the 14th floor of the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto and is known for being the only revolving French restaurant in the city. The views were spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama of Kyoto. The food was equally impressive, a fusion of French techniques and local ingredients. I tried a Wagyu steak that was cooked to perfection. Lena had some seafood, and Kai opted for a classic French dish. The rotating view kept us all entertained, and it was a truly memorable dining experience. The restaurant's elegant interior, adorned with traditional Japanese paper, added a unique touch to the ambiance.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C.. This department store is a shopper's paradise, with everything from high-end brands to local crafts. Lena was on the hunt for some traditional Japanese fabrics, while Kai was more interested in the electronics section. I ended up buying a beautiful tea set, something to remind me of our time in Kyoto. We explored the T8 specialty store zone, which was themed around art and culture, and I found some unique art pieces by local artists. It was a great way to support the local economy and bring home a piece of Kyoto's vibrant arts scene. The department store's convenient location on Shijo Street made it easily accessible, and we enjoyed strolling through the lively street, soaking in the atmosphere.

As evening approached, we headed to Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION for dinner. Now, I've had Kobe beef before, but this was on another level. The steak was cooked teppanyaki style right in front of us, and it was melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The chef was a true artist, preparing each dish with precision and care. The restaurant had a modern, elegant atmosphere, and the service was impeccable. We opted for a course menu that included soup, salad, vegetables, and, of course, the star of the show – the Kobe beef. It was a truly indulgent experience, and worth every penny. The restaurant's location in the Gion district added to the charm, as we were able to take a stroll through the historic streets after dinner.

Reflecting on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience Kyoto with my family. The blend of spiritual reflection, cultural immersion, and culinary delights made for a truly unforgettable day. And as we prepare for tomorrow's adventures – a visit to the Kyoto Imperial Palace and the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, followed by drinks at The Common One Bar Kyoto – I know that our journey is far from over. I'm particularly excited about seeing the Kyoto Imperial Palace. I've read so much about its history and significance, and I can't wait to see it in person. Plus, Lena is especially keen on exploring the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, as she's always been fascinated by traditional Japanese gardens. I'm sure Kai will enjoy the open spaces and the chance to stretch his legs after a day of temple visits and shopping. It's moments like these, sharing new experiences with my family, that make travel so rewarding.
Tonight, as I sit here writing, I'm filled with a sense of contentment. Kyoto has a way of slowing you down, of making you appreciate the simple things in life. It's a place that nourishes the soul, and I'm grateful for every moment we've spent here.
Aloha from Kyoto,
