A Fond Farewell to Kyoto
As our Kyoto adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared as a family. Today was a day of serene beauty and quiet contemplation, a perfect ending to our cultural immersion in this captivating city. It was a day to soak in the last moments, breathe in the crisp winter air, and etch the sights and sounds of Kyoto into our memories.
Our final day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Fujiya. The delicate flavors and artful presentation were a delightful way to start the day. Kai, surprisingly, was the first to try the natto, a dish of fermented soybeans. While Lena and I watched with a mix of curiosity and slight apprehension, he dove right in. His reaction? A scrunch of the nose followed by, It's… interesting, Dad. Definitely an experience! I had to agree; it was certainly unique. Lena, ever the gracious one, managed a polite bite, declaring it an acquired taste. Me? I stuck to the grilled fish and rice, a comforting and familiar start to the day.

After breakfast, we set out to explore Yasaka Shrine. The shrine was beautiful, especially with the winter sunlight filtering through the trees. We took our time wandering through the grounds, admiring the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was fascinating to learn that Yasaka Shrine is also known as the Gion Shrine and is famous for hosting the Gion Matsuri in July, one of Japan's most renowned festivals. While we were there, we witnessed locals participating in Okeramairi, a unique New Year's tradition where they light sacred ropes from burning prayer sticks and carry the embers home to light their cooking fires. It was a captivating sight, a blend of ancient ritual and everyday life.

The end of a journey is not the end of memory; it's the beginning of reflection.
Next on our itinerary was Sannenzaka, a charming, stone-paved pedestrian road lined with traditional buildings and shops. The walk was enchanting, with each step carrying us further into Kyoto's rich history. The area was the first in Kyoto to be nominated as a historic preservation district, offering a glimpse into the traditional Kyo Machiya architecture, designed to withstand Kyoto’s unique weather. We strolled leisurely, browsing the shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. Lena found a beautiful silk scarf, a perfect memento of our trip, while Kai picked out a quirky keychain for his backpack. I found myself drawn to a small shop selling handcrafted wooden toys, a nostalgic reminder of my own childhood in Hilo. I picked up a small wooden ukulele, hoping to inspire Kai to learn a few Hawaiian tunes.

For lunch, we indulged in a traditional Kyoto kaiseki meal at Hanasaki. The restaurant was an oasis of calm, with tatami mats and serene garden views. The multi-course meal was a culinary journey, each dish a work of art. We savored the delicate flavors of tofu, yuba (tofu skin), and namafu (gluten cake), all Kyoto specialties. Kai, ever the adventurous eater, even tried the Hamo (pike conger), a local delicacy. The presentation was exquisite, a feast for the eyes as well as the palate. Lena was particularly impressed with the attention to detail, noting the seasonal ingredients and the chef's obvious passion for his craft.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to immerse ourselves in Kyoto's nightlife with a visit to Kyoto Pub. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying a drink and good company. I opted for a local sake, while Lena tried a plum wine. Kai, of course, stuck to a soft drink. We chatted with fellow travelers, sharing stories and travel tips. It was a great way to unwind and reflect on our Kyoto adventure.

For our final dinner in Kyoto, we chose Yasakadori Enraku, known for its authentic Kyoto cuisine and tranquil atmosphere. The restaurant was a perfect setting for our farewell meal. We savored the flavors of Oden, a traditional Japanese hotpot dish, with a light but deeply infused broth. The restaurant’s elegant ambiance and attentive service made the evening truly special. As we ate, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip: exploring Fushimi Inari Shrine, wandering through the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and discovering hidden temples and gardens.

As we walked back to Hotel Gimmond Kyoto, the city lights twinkled around us, casting a magical glow on the streets. The air was crisp and cool, a gentle reminder of the winter season. We stopped for a moment to take it all in, a final mental snapshot of this beautiful city. I couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness that our time in Kyoto was coming to an end, but also a deep sense of gratitude for the memories we had created.

Tomorrow, we leave Kyoto, but we take with us a treasure trove of experiences and a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been a journey of discovery, connection, and growth for our family. I am grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with Lena and Kai, and I know that the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. While there are no specific itinerary items planned for tomorrow, as it marks the end of our trip, I know that the memories of Kyoto will stay with us long after we've left its enchanting embrace.
Aloha from Kyoto (for the last time!),
Walter
P.S. I almost forgot to mention! I managed to find a small Irish pub in Kyoto, Dublin, Kyoto. It was nice to see a familiar sight, even if the menu was a fusion of Irish and Japanese cuisine. They even had fish and chips, which were surprisingly good! It was a fun little detour in our cultural exploration.
I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all soon!
Until next time,
