A Day of Emperors and Gardens

Today, Kyoto unfolded before us like a meticulously painted scroll, revealing layers of history, natural beauty, and culinary delights. It was a day of contrasts, from the formal elegance of imperial grounds to the laid-back vibe of hidden bars. The chill in the air only added to the charm, making each warm encounter and savory bite all the more satisfying.

Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Sakuragawa. I must admit, sometimes I miss my usual Hawaiian breakfast with fresh tropical fruits, but I am always open to new experiences. This morning, we enjoyed a spread of local delicacies that Lena was very excited about. Kai, on the other hand, was a little more reserved, but he tried everything at least once. I always encourage him to step outside of his comfort zone, just as my parents did with me growing up in Hilo.

After breakfast, we ventured into the heart of Kyoto to visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace. As a cultural consultant, I'm always drawn to places steeped in history, and this palace certainly didn't disappoint. The Kyoto Imperial Palace served as the residence of the Emperor for many years. The palace is open to the public throughout the year, except on Mondays and from December 28th to January 4th. We were lucky it was a Monday, so we were able to visit. The stark beauty of the traditional architecture against the clear winter sky was breathtaking. The intricate details of the buildings and the serene gardens spoke volumes about the rich history of Japan. I imagined the emperors of old walking these same paths, making decisions that shaped the nation. It was a humbling experience, and I tried to convey some of that to Kai, hoping he would appreciate the weight of history as much as I do.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Next, we strolled through the adjacent Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. Even in January, the garden held a certain charm. The manicured landscapes and the bare branches of the trees created a peaceful, almost meditative atmosphere. It was easy to see why this garden is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. I could picture it in spring, alive with cherry blossoms, but there was something special about seeing it in its winter guise. The crisp air and the quiet solitude allowed for reflection and a deeper appreciation of nature's beauty. We spent a good hour wandering through the garden, taking in the sights and sounds, and simply enjoying each other's company. Lena, with her curatorial eye, pointed out the subtle details in the landscaping, while Kai, ever the observant teenager, captured the scenes with his phone, no doubt to share with his friends back in Berlin.

For lunch, we decided to try something a little different and headed to Khaos Spice Diner. I had read about their unique curry dishes, and I was intrigued. The diner was a vibrant mix of Indian spices and Japanese dashi. The restaurant had a chill vibe, with reggae music playing in the background. I opted for the Khaos pork keema curry, while Lena chose the chicken curry. Kai, being the adventurous eater that he is, went for all three curries on the chalkboard. The curries were sloppy, messy, and comforting. The flavors were bold and complex, a testament to the chef's skill. It was a welcome change from the more traditional Japanese cuisine we had been eating, and it was a hit with all of us. Even Lena, who usually prefers milder flavors, enjoyed the spicy kick of the curry.

As the day wound down, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. After doing some research, I decided to take Lena to The Common One Bar Kyoto. The entrance to the building is wonderful and features tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a space where tradition and modernity blend beautifully. The bar is known for its creative cocktails and attentive bartenders. The bar had a hideout-like atmosphere and I could spend a relaxing time there. I had a brandy-based cocktail. It was very tasty, with the unique aroma of brandy and the refreshing flavor of the fruit. Kai, of course, stuck to non-alcoholic options, but he enjoyed the atmosphere and the chance to try some unique Japanese snacks. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Kyoto, a chance to unwind and reflect on all that we had seen and experienced.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Heian Shrine and explore Pontocho. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Heian Shrine, with its striking architecture and beautiful gardens. Pontocho, with its narrow alleyways and traditional restaurants, promises to be a feast for the senses. We'll also be stopping by the Kyoto Crafts Store to pick up some souvenirs. It's hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end, but I'm determined to make the most of our remaining days in this amazing city. I am also very much looking forward to having breakfast at Masayoshi Japanese Dining. I heard their food is amazing!

Kyoto continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. The blend of old and new, the reverence for tradition, and the warmth of the people make it a truly special place. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family, and I know that these memories will stay with us long after we've left Japan. I am also grateful that Lena convinced me to bring my Ukulele. I will make sure to play it tomorrow!
