Finding Peace in Kyoto's Ancient Paths

Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to soak in the quiet beauty that Kyoto so generously offers. Leaving the cozy embrace of Hotel Gimmond Kyoto, Lena, Kai and I set out to discover the serene corners of this captivating city. It’s amazing how much a change of scenery can rejuvenate the spirit, especially when that scenery is steeped in history and tranquility.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi, nestled within THE THOUSAND KYOTO hotel near Kyoto Station. The restaurant offered a delightful start to the day with its traditional Japanese cuisine. The elegant setting and meticulously prepared dishes set a high bar for the culinary experiences to follow. We savored the delicate flavors, a perfect blend of tradition and innovation, fueling us for the day’s adventures. It was a bit of a splurge, but hey, you only live once, right? Plus, Lena was particularly excited about trying some authentic Japanese breakfast dishes.

Walking the Philosopher's Path

The first stop on our itinerary was the famed Philosopher's Path. Named after the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who used this route for daily meditation, the path stretches for about two kilometers along a canal, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Despite it being January, the winter landscape had a subtle charm. The bare branches of the cherry trees hinted at the vibrant display to come in spring, and the quiet atmosphere allowed for introspection.

As we strolled along, I couldn't help but reflect on my own life. Leaving Hawaii for Berlin was a huge shift, but it opened up a world of new experiences. Just like Nishida Kitaro found inspiration in his walks, I find solace in exploring new cultures and landscapes. Kai, ever the observant teenager, was busy snapping photos, capturing the essence of the serene environment. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, pointed out the subtle beauty in the moss-covered stones and the gentle flow of the canal. The winter air was crisp, invigorating our senses as we walked.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its grand temples but in the quiet corners where history whispers and nature soothes.

We paused at a small teahouse along the way, sipping matcha and enjoying traditional sweets. The warmth of the tea was a welcome contrast to the cool air outside. It was a perfect moment of tranquility, a chance to simply be present and appreciate the beauty around us. I even tried to explain the concept of 'Aloha' to the teahouse owner, hoping to share a little bit of my Hawaiian heritage with him.

Exploring the Enchanting Gion District

Next on our list was Gion, Kyoto’s geisha district. Stepping into Gion felt like stepping back in time. The narrow streets, lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, exuded an air of mystery and elegance. Although seeing a geiko or maiko (apprentice geiko) is rare, the atmosphere alone was worth the visit. We wandered through Hanamikoji Street, the main thoroughfare, admiring the preserved architecture and imagining the lives of those who once walked these very streets.

We learned that Gion is split into two main areas: Gion Kobu and Gion Higashi. Each area has its own unique charm and set of teahouses where geiko perform. The history of Gion dates back to the 17th century, and it remains one of the most famous geisha districts in Japan. As we walked, we were mindful of the recent rules put in place to protect the culture and community of Gion. We made sure to stay on public paths, avoid taking photos of geiko without permission, and keep noise levels down.

Kai was particularly fascinated by the stories of the geiko and their rigorous training in traditional Japanese arts. Lena, ever the art enthusiast, appreciated the architectural details of the machiya houses and the overall aesthetic of the district. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to this place, a feeling that transcended time and culture. It reminded me of the importance of preserving cultural heritage and respecting traditions.

A Culinary Journey Through Kyoto

For lunch, we ventured to Goichi Pizza, seeking a change from the traditional Japanese fare. The pizza was surprisingly good, a testament to the global culinary scene in Kyoto. The chewy crust and flavorful toppings were a welcome treat, and Kai was particularly pleased with the selection. It was a casual and relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a midday break.

As evening approached, we had dinner at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, a vegan restaurant that offered a delightful surprise. Being a meat-lover, I was a little skeptical at first, but the innovative and flavorful dishes won me over. Lena, who is always keen on trying new things, was thrilled with the menu. Kai, surprisingly, enjoyed the vegan burger, declaring it better than some of the meat burgers he's had. The restaurant had a cozy and warm ambiance, making it a perfect spot for a family dinner. I tried the vegan pancakes, which were fluffy and delicious. It was a reminder that culinary adventures can be found in unexpected places.

An Evening Toast at Kyoto Star Bar

To cap off the day, I decided to sneak off for a nightcap at the Kyoto Star Bar. Lena, Kai, and I parted ways near the hotel, and I told them I was going for a short walk to clear my head. The Kyoto Star Bar was a bit of a hidden gem. The bartender, dressed in a traditional kimono, crafted exquisite cocktails with a touch of Japanese flair. I ordered a Ki No Bi Negroni, which was highly recommended. The classy atmosphere and expertly made drinks provided a perfect end to a day of exploration. It was a moment of quiet reflection, a chance to savor the flavors of Kyoto and appreciate the beauty of the day.

As I sipped my drink, I thought about tomorrow’s itinerary. We plan to visit Kinkaku-ji (the Golden Pavilion) and Ryoan-ji, two more iconic landmarks in Kyoto. Kai is particularly excited about seeing the Golden Pavilion, while Lena is looking forward to the Zen garden at Ryoan-ji. We'll also try some new restaurants, including Hafuu for breakfast and Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, we'll find some time for shopping at Takashimaya Kyoto S.C.

Back at the hotel, I found Lena and Kai already fast asleep, dreaming of temples and gardens. As I drifted off to sleep myself, I felt a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day and excitement for what tomorrow would bring. Kyoto, with its blend of tradition and modernity, continues to captivate and inspire. It's a journey of discovery, both of the world around us and of ourselves.
