Day 2: Whispers of Bamboo and Ancient Echoes: A Day in Arashiyama
Discover the serene beauty of Arashiyama with my family, from the enchanting Bamboo Forest to the peaceful Tenryu-ji Temple gardens.
Journey into Arashiyama's Heart
Today, Kyoto revealed another layer of its captivating soul. It was a day of serene landscapes, ancient temples, and culinary delights, all experienced through the unique lens of Arashiyama. I'm eager to share the magic we encountered, hoping it inspires you to seek out similar moments of peace and wonder in your own travels.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Nakamura. I always appreciate starting the day with an authentic experience, and this was no exception. The restaurant was cozy, and the staff greeted us with warm smiles, making us feel instantly welcome. I opted for a classic set meal featuring grilled fish, miso soup, and an assortment of pickled vegetables. Lena enjoyed a similar spread, while Kai, ever the adventurous eater, tried natto (fermented soybeans) for the first time. His reaction was priceless – a mix of curiosity and slight disgust, but he gamely finished his portion. I remember when I first tried natto; it was an acquired taste, to say the least. It's funny how food can evoke such strong memories and emotions.
After breakfast, we made our way to Arashiyama. The train ride itself was a treat, offering glimpses of the surrounding countryside. Arriving in Arashiyama, we were immediately struck by the tranquility of the area. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the bustling city center. The plan was to immerse ourselves in Arashiyama's natural beauty and cultural heritage, and the crisp January air only heightened the feeling of stepping back in time.
Our first stop was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. As we stepped onto the path, we were enveloped by towering stalks of bamboo, their green hues creating a mesmerizing canopy overhead. The sunlight filtered through the dense foliage, casting dappled shadows on the path. It was a truly magical experience, the gentle rustling of the bamboo leaves creating a soothing symphony. Lena was in her element, snapping photos from every angle, while Kai, initially skeptical, soon found himself captivated by the forest's ethereal beauty. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale and grandeur of nature. It reminded me of the bamboo forests back in Hawaii, though these were different, carrying a unique sense of history and Zen.

In the heart of Arashiyama, we discovered a sanctuary where nature and spirituality intertwine, leaving us humbled and inspired.
Emerging from the bamboo forest, we strolled towards Tenryu-ji Temple, a Zen temple with a rich history and stunning gardens. As we approached, the temple's imposing gates and traditional architecture immediately commanded our attention. We paid the entrance fee and stepped into a world of serene beauty.

The Sogenchi Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, was a masterpiece of landscape architecture. A central pond reflected the surrounding mountains and meticulously arranged rocks, creating a sense of harmony and balance. We wandered along the garden paths, marveling at the intricate details and the peaceful atmosphere. Lena, with her curatorial eye, appreciated the artistry and symbolism of the garden's design. Kai, surprisingly engaged, peppered me with questions about the history and significance of the temple. I explained how Tenryu-ji was built in 1339 by the ruling shogun Ashikaga Takauji to appease the spirit of Emperor Go-Daigo. It's fascinating how these historical threads are woven into the fabric of the present.
After exploring the gardens, we ventured into the temple's main buildings. The interiors were simple yet elegant, with tatami mats, sliding doors, and calligraphy scrolls adorning the walls. We removed our shoes before entering, a sign of respect for the sacred space. I took a moment to sit in quiet contemplation, trying to absorb the temple's tranquil energy. It was a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. I felt a sense of connection to the generations of monks who had meditated and practiced here, seeking enlightenment.
For lunch, we decided to try Arash's Kitchen, a local restaurant known for its Persian and Indian cuisine. It might seem odd to eat Middle Eastern food in Japan, but we were drawn in by the restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere. The owner, Arash, greeted us with genuine hospitality and guided us through the menu. We ordered a variety of dishes, including kebabs, biryani, and naan bread. The food was flavorful and satisfying, a delightful fusion of Persian and Indian spices. Kai especially loved the kebabs, while Lena raved about the biryani. It was a welcome change of pace from Japanese cuisine, and a reminder of the diverse culinary landscape that Kyoto has to offer. I was reminded of the small Persian restaurant near our place in Berlin and felt a little homesick.
As the afternoon wore on, we decided to explore more of Arashiyama. We strolled along the Togetsukyo Bridge, taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Katsura River. The scenery was breathtaking, even in the winter months. The bare trees and snow-dusted peaks added a touch of stark beauty to the landscape. I imagined how stunning it must be in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
Before dinner, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife with a visit to L'Escamoteur, a bar known for its unique cocktails and magical atmosphere. Finding it wasn't easy, but once inside, we were transported to another world. The bartender, a charismatic Frenchman, greeted us warmly and proceeded to create a series of inventive cocktails. The ambiance was intimate and mysterious, with dim lighting, vintage decor, and a touch of theatrical flair. Kai was fascinated by the bartender's tricks and illusions, while Lena and I enjoyed the expertly crafted drinks. It was a memorable experience, a perfect blend of mixology and magic.

For dinner, we chose Teppan Tavern Tenamonya, a teppanyaki restaurant in the Gion district. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a lively atmosphere. The chef, a friendly and skilled cook, prepared our meal right before our eyes on a sizzling teppan grill. We ordered a selection of meats, seafood, and vegetables, all cooked to perfection. The flavors were incredible, enhanced by the chef's expert seasoning and grilling techniques. Kai was particularly impressed by the chef's knife skills, while Lena enjoyed the interactive dining experience. It was a delicious and entertaining meal, a fitting end to a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Nijō Castle, known for its stunning architecture and historical significance, and then dive into the world of manga at the Kyoto International Manga Museum. Lena is particularly excited about the Manga Museum, given her profession. I am looking forward to seeing the Ninomaru Palace. And to cap off the day, we're thinking of visiting the Daimaru Kyoto Store for some shopping. I am already thinking about what souvenirs to bring back for my friends back in Berlin.
