A Day of Sacred Spaces and Tasty Places
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the vibrant spirituality of Kyoto's famed shrines with the comforting embrace of its culinary scene. Liam, Maya, and I set out with a sense of anticipation, ready to immerse ourselves in the cultural tapestry of this ancient city. As a UX designer, I always appreciate how thoughtfully spaces are designed to evoke specific emotions and experiences, and today was a masterclass in that.
Our first stop was the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha. Even in January, the air was crisp, carrying the scent of incense and the promise of adventure. The approach to the shrine was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all drawn to this sacred place. Knowing that Fushimi Inari Taisha was founded in 711, before Kyoto even became the capital, filled me with a sense of awe. It's incredible to think of the countless prayers and wishes that have echoed through these grounds for over 1300 years. Maya was particularly excited, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the sights and sounds around her.
Explore the enchanting Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto's iconic Shinto shrine famous for its thousands of vibrant torii gates and breathtaking mountain trails.
The vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountainside were even more breathtaking in person than in any photograph I’d seen. Each gate, donated by individuals and businesses, created a mesmerizing tunnel that seemed to transport us to another world. As we began our ascent, the crowds gradually thinned, and a sense of tranquility settled over us. It was a welcome change from the lively atmosphere at the base of the mountain. I found myself reflecting on the history of the Hata clan, who originally enshrined the gods of rice and sake production here, and how Inari worship evolved to encompass business prosperity as well. It's fascinating how traditions adapt and remain relevant over centuries.
We didn't make it to the very top – Maya's little legs were starting to tire – but we climbed high enough to feel a sense of accomplishment and to soak in the stunning views of Kyoto below. Liam, ever the supportive husband, carried Maya on his shoulders for a stretch, pointing out interesting details along the way. I paused to capture the moment, the vibrant red of the torii gates contrasting against the green of the surrounding forest, a perfect encapsulation of the beauty of Japan. The crisp January air made the climb invigorating, and we were grateful for the warm clothing we'd packed. I only wished I hadn't forgotten my portable charger; my phone battery was already starting to dwindle!
The journey through the thousands of torii gates at Fushimi Inari wasn't just a walk, it was a passage through time and tradition, each step resonating with centuries of devotion.
After descending from Fushimi Inari, our stomachs were rumbling, so we headed to Yasakadori Enraku for breakfast. Tucked away behind Kenninji Temple, this traditional Japanese restaurant exuded a sense of calm and refinement. The private room was a welcome respite from the bustling crowds, and we settled in to enjoy a delicious meal of Oden and Kyoto cuisine. Maya was particularly fond of the delicate dashi flavors, and Liam and I appreciated the tranquil atmosphere. It was a perfect start to the day, setting a peaceful tone for our explorations.

Next on our itinerary was Toji Temple, another of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Founded in 796, just after the capital moved to Kyoto, Toji Temple has a rich and fascinating history. As we approached the temple grounds, the towering five-storied pagoda immediately caught our eye. At 57 meters tall, it's the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan and a true symbol of Kyoto. I learned that the pagoda was originally erected by Kobo Daishi in 826, which added to its historical significance.

We explored the Kondo Hall, the temple's main hall, which houses a wooden statue of the Yakushi Buddha flanked by his attendants. The sheer scale and artistry of the statue were awe-inspiring. Next door, we visited the Kodo Hall, which contains 19 statues imported from China by Kobo Daishi. The statues are arranged according to a mandala, with Dainichi Buddha at the center, surrounded by Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and guardian kings. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the statues were truly remarkable.
As we wandered through the temple grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the history and traditions that have been preserved here for centuries. It was fascinating to learn that Toji Temple was once one of only three Buddhist temples allowed in the city when it became the capital of Japan. I also discovered that January is a special time to visit Toji Temple, as the Goma Fire Ritual often takes place then, with priests performing ceremonies to ward off evil spirits. Although we didn't get to witness the ritual, just knowing it was a possibility added to the mystique of the place.
For lunch, we decided to try Goichi Pizza, a highly-rated pizzeria in Kyoto. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, we were all craving something a little different. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a casual atmosphere that immediately put us at ease. We ordered a Margherita pizza and a pepperoni pizza, both of which were cooked to perfection in a stone oven. The crust was crispy and chewy, the sauce was flavorful, and the toppings were fresh and delicious. Maya devoured her pizza with gusto, declaring it the best pizza she'd ever had. Liam and I agreed – it was a welcome taste of home in the midst of our cultural adventure. It was a small restaurant, but all the food was delicious!

As evening approached, we made our way to The SODOH Higashiyama Kyoto for dinner. This restaurant is located in a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building, complete with a stunning garden. The ambiance was elegant and refined, a perfect setting for a special meal. We opted for the set dinner menu, which featured a variety of Italian-inspired dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, both in terms of presentation and flavor. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. It was an unforgettable dining experience, a true highlight of our trip.

To cap off the evening, Liam and I decided to sneak away for a quick drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto. This hidden gem is tucked away in the Gion district, a modern bar that embraces the traditional atmosphere of Kyoto. The bar features tatami rooms and a tea room, creating a unique blend of tradition and modernity. The bartenders were attentive and skilled, crafting creative cocktails with precision and flair. We enjoyed a couple of drinks in the intimate setting, savoring the last moments of our day of exploration. I had a brandy-based cocktail which was very tasty, with the unique aroma of brandy and the refreshing flavor of the fruit.

As we walked back to Matsui Bekkan Hanakanzashi, the streets of Kyoto were quiet and peaceful.
