Last Day in the 'Little Marrakech'

As our Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant tapestry of experiences we've woven in Taroudant. Today was all about soaking up the last drops of this enchanting city, from its bustling markets to its hidden literary corners. While Liam and Maya were sad our adventure was coming to an end, I reminded them that we will have even more adventures in the future.

Our final day began, as many others had, with a delightful breakfast at Pizzeria Gourmandise. This morning, I opted for a Moroccan pancake, while Liam enjoyed a hearty pizza, and Maya devoured a plate of spaghetti. It's become a tradition for us to try something different each morning, and Pizzeria Gourmandise never disappoints with its fusion of Italian and Moroccan flavors.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we ventured into the heart of Taroudant to visit the Grande marché de l'artisanat. I was eager to find a few last-minute souvenirs and immerse ourselves in the local culture one final time.

The market was a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and scents. Artisans displayed their wares with pride, from intricately woven carpets to delicate Berber jewelry. Maya was particularly fascinated by a craftsman carving wooden toys, and Liam haggled for a beautiful leather bag, showcasing his newfound bargaining skills. I found myself drawn to a stall selling argan oil products, stocking up on a few bottles to bring back to Kelowna.

The best souvenirs aren't just objects; they're stories, memories, and pieces of a culture that you carry with you.

After the market, we decided to explore Tighonatine, a place I had read about but hadn't yet had the chance to visit. Tighonatine turned out to be a small village just outside Taroudant, known for its traditional Berber crafts and pottery. The drive there was scenic, passing through lush fields and small farms. Upon arrival, we were greeted by friendly locals who were eager to show us their workshops and creations.

Maya was thrilled to try her hand at pottery, and with the help of a local artisan, she crafted a small, albeit slightly lopsided, bowl. Liam and I admired the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the pottery, purchasing a few pieces to add to our collection. It was a truly authentic experience, far from the touristy hustle of the city center.

As the afternoon sun began to dip lower, we made our way back to Taroudant, stopping at Librairie Elmanahil that I had spotted earlier in the week. As a lover of books, I couldn't resist the urge to explore this literary haven. The bookstore was a treasure trove of Moroccan literature, history books, and travel guides. I picked up a beautifully illustrated book of Moroccan folktales for Maya and a novel by a local author for myself. It felt like the perfect way to capture the essence of our trip.

For lunch, we stopped at Snack El Benna, a local eatery known for its delicious and affordable Moroccan dishes. We ordered a variety of tagines and grilled meats, savoring the rich flavors and spices. Maya, surprisingly, developed a taste for tagine, declaring it her favorite Moroccan dish. The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere made it a memorable dining experience.

Our final dinner in Taroudant was at Snack Havana, a vibrant restaurant recommended by several locals. The restaurant was buzzing with activity, filled with families and friends enjoying their Friday evening. We ordered a selection of Moroccan salads, couscous, and grilled fish, delighting in the fresh ingredients and flavorful sauces. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a perfect spot for a family meal.

As we savored our last bites of Moroccan cuisine, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've shared in Taroudant. From exploring the ancient city walls to haggling in the bustling souks, we've immersed ourselves in the local culture and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we will be making our way back to Marrakech, before flying back home to Kelowna. I am sad that our trip is over but happy that we made so many amazing memories as a family. I know that we will cherish these memories forever. I am already looking forward to our next adventure!

As I reflect on our time here, I realize that Taroudant is more than just a city; it's a feeling, a memory, and a piece of my heart that I'll carry with me always.
