Family Adventure on Shikoku Island: A Cultural Journey in Japan
Day 13: Reflecting on Shikoku: Caves, Temples, and Heartfelt Farewells
Discovering the spiritual heart of Shikoku Island, Japan, with a final day exploring caves, temples, and savoring local flavors with family.
A Day of Reflection
As our Shikoku adventure draws to a close, today was a day of soaking in the last moments of this beautiful island. From exploring ancient caves to finding serenity in historic temples, and savoring the local cuisine, it was a fitting end to our journey. It’s hard to believe our 13 days here are already over, but the memories we’ve made with Maya and Liam will last a lifetime. Each experience, from the bustling markets to the quiet shrines, has added a unique layer to our understanding and appreciation of Japan.
Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at Yoronotaki Gomenten. It's a cozy spot, and the perfect place to fuel up for a day of exploration. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was a comforting and familiar start to the day, reminding me of the many delicious meals we’ve shared throughout this trip. Liam, ever the early bird, had already scoped out the best local coffee, and Maya was thrilled with her sweet pastries.
Delving into the Depths of Ryugado Museum
Our first stop was the Ryugado Museum. It's always fascinating to see how nature can sculpt such intricate and awe-inspiring formations. As we descended into the cool, damp air of the cave, we were immediately transported to another world. The stalactites and stalagmites created a mesmerizing landscape, with each formation telling a story millions of years in the making. Maya was particularly captivated by the colorful lights illuminating the cave's features, turning the experience into a magical adventure. We learned about the cave's geological history and its significance as a natural monument. Ryugado is one of the three major limestone caves in Japan, and it’s easy to see why it holds such a prestigious title. The cave was also home to early humans, adding a layer of historical intrigue to our visit. I couldn’t help but imagine what life must have been like for those who sought shelter within its depths.
The museum itself provided additional context, showcasing artifacts and exhibits related to the cave's formation and its ecological importance. It was a great way to deepen our understanding and appreciation for this natural wonder. Walking through the cave, I was struck by the sheer scale of the place. The narrow paths and towering formations created a sense of both intimacy and grandeur. Every corner revealed a new perspective, a new detail to marvel at. It was a truly immersive experience, one that engaged all of our senses. Ryugado is a designated National Natural Monument, and the museum enhances the experience by providing additional context about the cave’s formation and ecological importance.

Finding Peace at Dainichi Temple
Next on our itinerary was Dainichi Temple. After the cool darkness of the cave, the warm sunlight filtering through the temple grounds was a welcome change. The temple exuded a sense of tranquility and history, inviting us to slow down and reflect. This temple is number 28 on the Shikoku pilgrimage, and is one of three temples with the same name on the pilgrimage. We took our time wandering through the grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the meticulously maintained gardens. The air was filled with the scent of incense, adding to the serene atmosphere. Maya was fascinated by the intricate carvings and the vibrant colors of the temple buildings. She peppered us with questions about the temple's history and the significance of the various statues and symbols.
Dainichi Temple has a rich history, dating back centuries. It has been restored over time, and the main hall was rebuilt in 1997 using cypress and pine without nails. As we walked around, we saw a belfry and a hexagonal Jizō Hall. We learned about Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, and his connection to the temple. It was inspiring to learn about his journey and his dedication to spreading enlightenment. The temple also has a camphor tree that fell in a strong wind.
We took a moment to sit on a bench, simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance. It was a perfect opportunity to meditate and reflect on our journey through Shikoku. The temple provided a sense of calm and perspective, reminding us of the importance of mindfulness and gratitude. We saw stones used around the temple that were rough laval rock, similar to those used at Kōchi Castle. Maya made a point of lighting incense and making a small offering for good luck. It was a sweet gesture, one that showed how much she had absorbed from our cultural experiences.

A Culinary Farewell at Osusowake Shokudo Mado
For lunch, we ventured to Osusowake Shokudo Mado. This unique cafeteria is known for its heartwarming concept of sharing and community. The name Osusowake means to share something with others, embodying the spirit of paying it forward. The owner hopes that the cafeteria is a window that people could have connection with others. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, filled with the chatter of locals and the aroma of home-cooked meals. It was a bright room, filled with piano music.
The menu changes daily, depending on what vegetables the owner gets from farmers. We were delighted to discover that it operates as a Kodomo Shokudo, offering affordable meals to children and families. We enjoyed a delicious and wholesome meal, made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. It was a comforting and nourishing experience, one that truly felt like a taste of home. The owner, Ms. Chimi Suyama, wears a white sling and checked apron while she cooks. It was a great way to connect with the local community and support a business that is making a positive impact. I chatted with Ms. Suyama about her vision for the cafeteria and her commitment to providing nutritious meals to those in need. Her passion was infectious, and it was inspiring to see how she was using food to bring people together.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we made a final stop at Bar Rokudenashi. I had heard about its cozy atmosphere and decided to check it out.
