First Day Wonders in Florence

Arriving in Florence felt like stepping into a dream, a Renaissance painting come to life. The air buzzed with a palpable sense of history and artistry, a stark contrast to the sterile environment of airports and airplanes. I was eager to dive headfirst into this cultural mecca, and my itinerary for the day promised just that: a whirlwind tour of the city's most iconic landmarks.

The journey from Kelowna was long, but the anticipation kept me going. Liam was worried about me traveling alone, but I assured him I'd be fine. Maya even packed me a small, painted rock for good luck. I clutched it in my pocket as the taxi wound its way through the narrow streets, a tangible reminder of home.

My hotel, Corte Calzaiuoli Elegant Suites, was perfectly situated. After quickly settling in, I set off to explore.

The first stop was, of course, the Piazza del Duomo. Even in photos, it’s breathtaking, but nothing prepares you for the real thing. The sheer scale of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or the Duomo, is simply awe-inspiring. The intricate details of the marble facade, the vibrant colors, and the way the light played across its surface – it was all mesmerizing.

I decided to start with Giotto's Bell Tower. The climb was a bit daunting, 414 steps to the top, but I was determined. I’ve been trying to get into better shape lately, hiking more around Kelowna, so I hoped it would pay off. Each level offered a new perspective, a tantalizing glimpse of what awaited me at the summit. Panting and slightly sweaty, I finally emerged onto the top platform. The view was nothing short of spectacular.

Florence unfolded beneath me like a tapestry, a sea of terracotta rooftops punctuated by the occasional dome or tower, all framed by the rolling Tuscan hills in the distance.

I spent a good half-hour just soaking it in, taking photos, and trying to etch the scene into my memory. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, the kind that makes you feel truly alive. I could see the Duomo in all its glory from this vantage point, and the black mesh that some articles mentioned didn't bother me at all. The Duomo, or Florence Cathedral, consecrated in 1436, is a marvel. I learned that climbing the Dome requires a timed entry and a Brunelleschi Pass, which also grants access to the Baptistery, Opera del Duomo Museum, and Santa Reparata. Good to know for a future visit!

After descending from the bell tower, I ventured into the Cathedral itself. The interior, while grand, felt surprisingly austere compared to the elaborate facade. The vastness of the space was humbling, and I found myself gazing up at the intricate frescoes on the dome, trying to decipher the stories they told. I learned that no ticket is required for entry, making it accessible to all. The weight of history pressed down on me, the echoes of centuries of prayers and ceremonies resonating within the walls.

By this point, my stomach was starting to rumble. I had made a reservation for lunch at Vini e Vecchi Sapori, a small trattoria known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. Finding it was an adventure in itself, winding through a maze of narrow streets and alleyways. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, a testament to its popularity. I was seated at a cozy table and presented with a handwritten menu, a promising sign of the genuine culinary experience to come.

I opted for the *pappa al pomodoro*, a traditional tomato and bread soup, and a glass of local Chianti. The soup was hearty and flavorful, the perfect comfort food after a morning of exploring. The wine, rich and fruity, complemented the dish perfectly. It was a simple meal, but it was executed with such care and attention to detail that it felt like a culinary masterpiece. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic flavors.

After lunch, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. I had heard about Scuola del Cuoio, a leather school located in a former monastery, and I was eager to see their craftsmanship firsthand. The school was a bit hidden, tucked away behind the Basilica di Santa Croce, but it was well worth the effort to find. The moment I stepped inside, I was enveloped in the rich aroma of leather. Artisans were hard at work, cutting, stitching, and embossing leather goods with incredible skill and precision.

I watched as they transformed simple pieces of leather into beautiful wallets, belts, and bags. It was fascinating to witness the traditional techniques being passed down from one generation to the next. I ended up purchasing a small leather journal, which I had personalized with my initials in gold. It was a perfect souvenir, a tangible reminder of my Florentine adventure. The school was founded in 1950 to teach leatherworking to World War II orphans, and it continues to uphold the tradition of Florentine craftsmanship.

As evening approached, I made my way back towards the Piazza del Duomo. The square was even more enchanting in the soft, golden light of dusk. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music. I decided to treat myself to a coffee at Caffè Gilli, a historic café that has been serving patrons since 1733. The café was buzzing with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all enjoying the lively atmosphere.

I ordered a cappuccino and a pastry, and I sat at a table outside, soaking in the ambiance. The coffee was rich and creamy, the pastry sweet and decadent. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day. I learned that ordering at the bar is the traditional way to enjoy coffee, and that Caffè Gilli is known for its vintage charm and delicious treats.

For dinner, I had a reservation at Il Santo Bevitore, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on Tuscan cuisine. It was a bit of a walk from my hotel, but the anticipation kept me going. The restaurant was located on Via Santo Spirito. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the staff friendly and attentive. I ordered the *gnudi*, a traditional Tuscan dumpling dish, and a glass of local red wine. The food was exquisite, a perfect balance of flavors and textures. It was a culinary experience that I won't soon forget.

As I walked back to my hotel, I couldn't help but smile. My first day in Florence had been everything I had hoped for and more. I had seen incredible art, experienced authentic culture, and tasted delicious food. I was exhausted but exhilarated, my senses overloaded with beauty and inspiration. I knew that this was just the beginning of my Florentine adventure, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Uffizi Gallery, Ponte Vecchio, and Palazzo Vecchio, followed by a drink at Rasputin bar. I drifted off to sleep, already dreaming of Renaissance masterpieces and hidden alleyways, with Maya's painted rock safely tucked away on my nightstand.

Tonight, I am falling asleep feeling grateful for this adventure. It is exactly what I needed. I have missed these solo adventures, and I hope to have more of them in the future. It is nice to recharge my batteries and get inspired by the beauty of the world. I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with Liam and Maya when I return to Kelowna. For now, I will cherish these moments and make the most of my time in Florence.

I plan to visit the Galleria dell'Accademia to see Michelangelo's David and other masterpieces. The Galleria is celebrating Michelangelo's 550th anniversary with a series of events, which sounds fascinating. Also, I'll be sure to check out the local libraries, as they are hosting events for DanteDì, honoring Dante Alighieri.

I am also aware that the Florentine New Year, *Capodanno Fiorentino*, was just celebrated on March 25th, marking the start of a week of festivities. Although I missed the main day, I hope to catch some of the ongoing events that celebrate Florentine culture and craftsmanship. I am particularly interested in the artisanal displays and agri-food excellence in Piazza Santa Maria Novella.

I know that travel is about more than just ticking off sights on a list. It’s about immersing yourself in a new culture, connecting with people, and discovering new things about yourself. It’s about pushing your boundaries, challenging your assumptions, and opening your mind to new possibilities. And so far, Florence is delivering on all fronts.
