Your Itinerary

Duomo di Orvieto

Situated in less than two hours drive, Orvieto was an important Etruscan City-State. Orvieto has a unique history that dates back to over several million years ago. The origin of the Orvieto rock is most likely due to an ancient volcanic eruption. It is believed that today’s rock, where the city of Orvieto stands today, is one of these great masses of tufa rock flung from the large crater that is now the Bolsena Lake. The Etruscans inhabited Orvieto until the III Century BC, and consequently the Romans invaded it. It took the Romans two years to conquer Orvieto, which is a natural fortress, surrounded by cliffs. The Etruscans had dug an intricate web of caves and numerous wells, in order to defend Orvieto for a long time. In addition, to being known for its high quality cuisine (i.e. truffles), the city boasts an incredible Gothic Cathedral with a frescoed “Last Judgement” to rival Michelangelo’s one, a labyrinth of ancient underground and St.Patrick’s Well.

Our guide, Rosanna, and driver, Luigi, were very knowledgeable and friendly. We had a great time. Montepulciano and Orvieto are two classic Tuscan hilltop gems.

What a fabulous day! Rossana and Luigi two of best tour people we’ve ever met. Rossana planned a spectacular day, was very attentive to us, and took some of the most enjoyable pictures from the trip. Luigi is great driver. We felt very secure in the car, in the midst of all the wild Italian driving. The Orvieto church is stunning. The town is most enjoyable to walk and browse the stores. Montapulciano wine tasting was highlight of our 5 days in Rome. The red wine is some of the best we’ve had. The owner is a real delight to sit with and learn the stories of the vineyards! We sent several cases home and know we will become regular customers. We highly recommend this tour, especially if you love good red wine and this is some of the best! We will do this same tour again next year when we return to Italy

What a wonderful day trip from Rome. Orvieto is about an hour and a half from congested Rome and contains a magnificent cathedral most noted for the fresco cycle of Luca Signorelli. These frescos alone are worth the trip but the town of Orvieto is wonderful with excellent shopping and food. The people were friendly and proud of their town. The wine tasting was a wonderful experience and included an excellent light lunch. The guide and driver were excellent. Highly recommended.
