Your Itinerary

Piazza Duomo

Our tour starts from the heart of Amalfi, the cathedral square dedicated to Sant'Andrea. In the center stands the Baroque fountain depicting the patron saint of the coastal city. From it we could quench our thirst with fresh spring water and get ready to climb the approximately 60 steps that will lead us to the cathedral.

Duomo di Sant'Andrea

Its sumptuous facade decorated with glittering mosaics and arabesque arches is one of the symbols of the Amalfi coast. Arriving at the top of the steps, we will be in the presence of one of the oldest bronze doors in Italy, coming from ancient Constantinople (Istanbul). The Baroque interior of the cathedral houses precious works of art, including paintings depicting the life of Saint Andrew and a precious mother-of-pearl cross, one of a kind, from Jerusalem.

Admission Not Included

Chiostro del Paradiso

The cloister of Paradise will be the first stop on our itinerary to visit the religious complex of Sant'Andrea and takes its name from its ancient function as an aristocratic cemetery. In an Arab-like atmosphere, surrounded by 120 marble columns and intertwined arches, we will see ancient sarcophagi from the Roman age reused in the times of the "maritime republic" and frescoes from the Giotto school.

Admission Not Included

La Basilica del Crocifisso

The oldest nucleus of the complex is now used as a museum. We will be enchanted by a collection of sacred furnishings, reliquaries and other works of art, among which a very precious bishop's miter made of gold, precious stones and almost 20,000 beads stands out!

Admission Not Included

Amalfi Cripta Del Duomo

The holiest place in Amalfi which houses the relics of the saint. We will be dazzled by the rich Baroque decoration, by its frescoed ceiling and impressed by the sumptuous bronze statue of Sant'Andrea

Admission Not Included

Arsenale di Amalfi - antico Arsenale della Repubblica Marinara

We will skirt the ancient maritime arsenals, where the galleys, nicknamed the sharks of the sea, were built. Today these historic shipyards come to life as shops where it is possible to admire the precious Amalfi paper.

Piazza Flavio Gioia

The square is dominated by the statue of the famous navigator Flavio Gioia, whose name is linked to the history of the compass. From here we will reach the most panoramic point of the ancient maritime republic, and inebriated by the scent of the sea, we will be in the ideal place to take our photo-postcard.

Piazza Municipio (Amalfi)

From the square where the municipal house of Amalfi stands, our walk towards Atrani will begin

Collegiate Santa Maria Maddalena

The churchyard is a wonderful panoramic terrace overlooking the sea, the view extends between the center of Atrani, Minori and Maiori. Here our experience will end and, with a pinch of imagination, we will say goodbye to the "Sleeping Giant" by Richard Wagner.

I completed this tour today with Simona as our guide. She was excellent: very knowledgable about the history of the area, pointing out archeological and architectural details that I never would’ve seen on my own. It was great to escape from the very busy main streets and find peace and tranquility in the cool network of alleys and passages that thread through the town. The walking tour starts quite gently in the main square. As you leave Amalfi and head to Atrani the steps become more challenging, but we stopped several times along the way to catch our breath. The perspectives of Amalfi and Atrani are really quite different from the paths above the town. Overall I’m really pleased to have taken this tour and would recommend it to anyone who is not shy of a good walk with a few steps. Grazie Simona!
