Stresa

Where the Borromean Gulf opens up, Stresa lies. The history of Stresa differs from that of the neighboring villages since in the eighteenth century some villas began to be built and then flanked by imposing hotels in a style that sometimes recalls the Liberty. at the time of elite tourism on a favorite of King Wurttemberg, the kings of England, elisabeth of saxony, artists and writers such as Dickens, Flaubert, Stendhal, Fogazzaro. In the parish church you can see a crucifixion attributed to Morazzone. Embark on the motorboats of the Stresatours Associated Motorboat Consortium to begin the visit of the Borromean Islands and reach the first island: Isola Madre

Isola Madre

Isola Madre is the first stop, it rises in the middle of the gulf and presents itself with a magnificent Renaissance palace, surrounded by one of the oldest and most important gardens in Italy. The mild climate of the island has allowed over the centuries to create a wonderful botanical garden with subtropical varieties, unique and rare species of camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons.

Island of the Fishermen (Isola dei Pescatori)

Isola dei Pescatori is the second stop, the most picturesque of the islands, but owes its name to the activity of its inhabitants. Its charm is given by the archaic simplicity, by the pleasant whiteness of the houses and streets. In addition to the typical local craft shops on the island, it is possible to taste delicious lake fish dishes in the renowned restaurants and trattorias. At the end of the visit of the Fishermen's Island you can take back the boats of C.M.A. to reach Isola Bella.

Palazzo Borromeo

It is a valid example of Lombard baroque, the visit starts from the ground floor, continues to the noble floor with the hall of medals where, among the paintings, stands a Christ and the Cananea attributed to Annibale Caracci; the hall of honor completed from 1948 to 1959 on the original designs, the music room with ancient musical instruments and paintings by Pietro Mulier; the Napoleon room, where the general slept on August 17-18, 1797, the room of Luca Giordano, so called because it houses three paintings of mythological subjects of the famous painter, the work room, the Zuccarelli room, the corridors, the ballroom , magnificent environment designed by Abbot Zanoia. By a staircase you go down to the caves with decorations in light and dark stones with themes evoking the seabed. Go up to the main floor where the corridor of mirrors is located, the antechamber with paintings by Tiepolo del cerano by Gioacchino Assereto, the passage to the tapestry gallery.

Isola Bella

Isola Bella is the third stop of our motorboats, the most famous of the three islands, it hosts the princely Borromeo palace surrounded by an Italian garden, built on ten terraces. The baroque palace contains a real museum where it is possible to admire original furnishings, Flemish tapestries in gold and silk, period weapons, sculptures, paintings and frescoes dated between the 16th and 19th centuries. The return takes place in Stresa Piazza Marconi, the headquarters of C.M.A. by Stresatours.

Complete waste of time and money as the tour did not run, the agent was not there, did not send me a ticket, did not contact me, did not reply, took my money and I’m waiting for a refund. Avoid this trip, use the regular ferry that is reliable, cheaper, goes to more places and goes regularly. Pay on the day for regular ferry, don’t book in advance for dodgy Viator agent. This trip should not be offered by Viator, very misleading.

Wonderful way to spend a day - beautiful! We enjoyed it greatly! Restaurants available on all 3 islands.

This was one of the highlights of our Italian trip. Easy paid parking at the marina. We took the ticket voucher to the ticket office where we received our tickets. Boats leave about every half hour beginning @ 9:00am last boat back from the islands are at around 5:00pm so you have plenty of time to explore the islands. Great fresh fish at the island restaurants and beautiful palaces and gardens.

We had to pay an extra fee before we got our tickets. They called it a docking fee. Cost 3 euros for 2 of us . Also parking 14 Euros for the day.not free

This is basically a ferry service on a smaller boat. We visited on a Saturday in June and didn't go to the first island until around 2:30. We stopped a Isola Bella, which is truly beautiful, but is also a mob scene (which we weren't prepared for.) There are restaurants and vendors on the island. However, we paid to go through the villa and the gardens. The villa was cool, but we were really interested in being outside. The gardens are fantastic. Very old fashioned and meticulously maintained. They have white peacocks! I liked that there was one way to go through the villa and to the outside. By the time we were done, around 4pm our boat simply took us back to Stresa. There was no option to go to Isola Madre. This was unfortunate, but there was no communication. The boat was a bit hard to find, as there are many such outfits, but it was a nice ride.

Stresa was quite crowded and busy as we were there on a Saturday in June. We got a late start on our tour and found it a bit confusing to find the proper boat service. Because we began late they said we could visit only 2 islands. By the time we were finished at Isola Bella they just returned us to the public dock. They gave us no opportunity to visit Madre. Some of this is our fault due to late start but there was a lack of communication from the boat drivers. The next morning we walked along the promenade away from Stresa and found a smaller ferry dock. It was much quieter (Sunday morning) and seemed like we could’ve had a better experience. Isola Bella was quite the tourist trap! My husband was appalled. However the palace and gardens were spectacular and worth seeing. I wish we could have seen Madre as well.

Easy experience. Was never left waiting for too long and took us to all the islands. Efficient and well priced. I would recommend

Be prepared you will not be on your own, its busy and it costs a few euro's but well worth it. the grounds of the main island with its manicured gardens is absolutely stunning. Isla pescatore is quaint and busy. It was for us an essential part of our trip to lago Maggiore.
