Your Itinerary

Cefalu Coast

located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily about 70 km (43 mi) east of the provincial capital and 185 km (115 mi) west of Messina.

Duomo di Cefalu

The Cathedral, begun in 1131, in a style of Norman architecture which would be more accurately called Sicilian Romanesque. The exterior is well preserved, and is largely decorated with interlacing pointed arches; the windows also are pointed. On each side of the façade is a massive tower of four stories. The round-headed Norman portal is worthy of note. A semi-circular apse is set into the east end wall. Its strengthening counterforts that work like buttresses, are shaped as paired columns to lighten their aspect. The groined vaulting of the roof is visible in the choir and the right transept, while the rest of the church has a wooden roof. Fine cloisters, coeval with the cathedral, adjoin it.

Duomo di Monreale

**ATTENTION. due to renovation works throughout 2024, the cathedral (not the cloister) will only remain partially open to visitors.** Duomo di Monreale forms its own archdiocese and is home to a historical Norman-Byzantine cathedral. This has been designated as one of several buildings named in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a group of nine inscribed as Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.

That was spectacularly bad for the private tour with a price of the transatlantic ticket. The places were amazing on it’s own but our guide was boring and unprofessional. Within first 20 minutes in a car we learned about his political views which, by the way, were one degree of separation from Mussolini. ( And why did we need to know that?) He was somewhat ok with description of Duomo di Monreale but after that he was basically done. Not a single interesting story. We learned nothing about Cefalu. It was more like- “This is a coin”. “This is a painting “ I mean literally. Me and my wife almost choked when she asked him how long he was doing this and the answer was - 16 years! Anyway, just don’t do it. Get yourself a transfer and hire a guide on the spot for like $40-50. Oh, and yes, as mentioned in a previous review, it was shorter than announced but in our case it was a relief.

The trip wasn't good. We didn't have time to explore on our own and we only visited 1 church in Monreale and 1 Duomo in Cefalu. It said full day tour with snacks and drinks. It started at 9 am with driving and we came back before 3 pm. It said on voucher tour should be 7-9 hours with snack and drinks. I would like to get a refund as many things promised on Tripadvisor weren't true.
