Monselice is a quiet, picturesque walled town about a 30 min train ride from Venice. It sits at the bottom of two hills, the top of one having been the site of a quarry dating back to Roman times and the other was topped by a ruined castle called Rocca. Walking inside the walls, the sense of 2000 years of history was all-pervading…almost eerie! The focus of the tour was a visit to the 15th century Castle of Monselice and the Sanctuary of San Georgio. The castle houses an incredible collection of well-preserved European medieval weaponry, as well as showcasing what money and good taste could provide in a castle built in those times - it was elegant, well designed and obviously very comfortable. A walk up the hill towards Rocca to visit San Georgio, passed gated villas with glimpses of their beautiful gardens, as well a passing the 16th century “Seven Church Sanctuary” ( actually there are only 6). These Palliadian-style small churches were built for pilgrims coming down from the north, and represented the 7 churches of Rome, thereby saving them the trek to Rome for a Papal blessing. The panoramic views over the flat countryside and the modern parts of the town towards Padua as we walked further towards San Georgio were superb, and showed just what a sturdy fortress this little town had been. Camilla, our tour guide, proved to be an encyclopaedia of knowledge I doubt any PhD history student could fault, providing anecdotes and facts about a town she loves. This is a town with lots more to see and savour…however we sensed that the locals were trying to keep it a bit of a secret? Graeme & Susan
