Seeing the actual building, learning about all the discovery and seeing the faded frescoes and thoughts on what the rooms might be used for was what I was looking for. Instead we heard a great deal about Egypt. While a part of Nero's life, it certainly wasn't the main focus of his life. As the previous guests were leaving we hear such wonderful comments on the tour!!! I honestly couldn't get out of there fast enough. While our tour guide was sweet she didn't have the best command of the English language and she was very soft spoken. In a group of 6 I missed a lot of what she had to say. I would also have liked to purchase the book but they didn't sell any items there. So if you're early go to the Palatine book shop ahead of time. We were the last tour of the day on our last day in Rome. No book for me. I was awestruck by the building. The drawings of the complex, and amazed at the short time it took to build all of it!! It truly is amazing and I would suggest going to see it anyway as many parts are gone and still crumbling. Who knows how much time it has left. We will go again and fingers crossed we get a better guide.

Be careful--Viator may sell you a tour that does not exist! We signed up and paid for the VR experience at Domus Aurea. When we arrived at the site, the staff there said that the VR experience was not offered on that date and that the tour company should not have sold us the VR tour on that date. I have been back and forth with my credit card company. Viator insisting that the service was provided and it was not! The bottom line is: If you want the VR tour, do not trust Viator's dates because they may not be right and you may be out hundreds of dollars like me. Verify with the location itself the days that the VR experience are offered.

This was the biggest waste of time and money. We left early it was so bad. The tour guide literally told us nothing about the building we were in - what different things we saw were used for, etc. Instead it was all about Egyptian history (which apparently Nero was fond of). I can read history on the internet, I wanted to hear about the Domus.

Very very disappointed to find that this tour does not exist at all. When we arrived we found that the VR is not offered during the week. The Domus Aurea runs the tours and told us that at this time of year it is not offered on weekdays and that all tour companies and vendors are aware. We declined to enter as this was the point of our visit. And to clarify - I did reach out and converse via email prior to purchasing with a viator rep who assured me the vr would be happening. Had I not been assured of it I would not be as frustrated with the dismissive reactions to my complaint. We did use viator for other experiences with good results but the lack of accountability to this obvious mistake on their part would make me hesitant to use again.

An incomprehensible archeological wonder 50 feet below the entrance that is full of architectural majesty and mystery. The virtual reality experience at the end is the glue that puts the imagination to rest.

We really enjoyed the tour and the guide was very engaging, although seem of his English pronunciation was a bit hard to follow (E.G. heirs was pronounced ‘higher’. The VR element was very good and we both thought that it would be better to have that at the beginning instead of the end as it provided and image to which we could then ‘hang’ the remains on

In my opinion this is one the best things you can go and see in Rome. This was my third visit and I mainly went because they've got a special exhibition about the Nero and the cult of Isis running in 2023. This has increased the price - I paid €24 for a Saturday ticket (booked through Coopculture website). There is a mid week option that is cheaper but it doesn't include the full tour. My tour was a fully guided view of the new exhibition including new light projections along with the Virtual Reality reconstruction and a look at the construction site. The guide (Nico - I think) was excellent. You don't enter through the main door, I assume this is just while the exhibit is running, but further up the hill where you used to exit. The Domus Aurea is situated very close to the Colosseum and it's a great option to escape the heat and crowds of Rome. It lasted about 75 minutes.

You canceled my tour and substituted a festival. Very disappointing and unprofessional. You also never answered my emails about refunding my money for 11 tickets.

The Domus Aurea is Nero's Golden House. After the purely coincidental fire destroyed a large part of ancient Rome Nero was able to appropriate the ruins to build his palace complex. This was a ridiculously large (over 300 acres) and ostentatious project, even for the Julian emperors and after his death the palace was largely dismantled and destroyed. The area left now survived as it was filled in with earth to act as foundations for Trajan's new public baths. The Domus remained hidden until around 1500 years later when a farmer digging a well broke through one of the vaulted ceilings and discovered the intact murals and frescoes. This became an inspiration for a generation of Renaissance artists who visted the rooms and made copies of what they found. This was rather lucky as the paintings have now largely been destroyed after being exposed to air and damp. The complex is massive and only a small portion is open to the public with varying levels of artwork on display. A lot of it is faded completely and there are areas of damp with no trace of what was there before. There were some rooms with some decent images left though and the sketch books of the 15th century artists may allow some kind of restoration once the structure is stabilised. The VR element of the tour showed us what the structure could have looked like in Nero's time and included a 'walk' onto the terrace to look over the site of the Colosseum (then an artificial lake) and the pleasure gardens that are now completely built upon. I have to say I preferred Nero's vision. The tour needs to be booked in advance, even in February it was sold out on the first day we visited but we were lucky enough to have a few days. The guide was fantastic and he spoke excellent English and really bought the tour to life.

Very impressive site. I would recommend this tour to everyone who visits Rome. Rometour organized it perfectly and the guide was very enthousiastic and had lots of interesting details. I opted for the VR-tour which I would also recommend. This gives you a much better understanding of what this palace once looked like and makes the experience more vivid.
