They display works from the immense collection amassed by the Catholic Church and the papacy throughout the centuries including several of the most renowned Roman sculptures and most important masterpieces of Renaissance art in the world. The museums contain roughly 70,000 works, of which 20,000 are on display, and currently employ 640 people who work in 40 different administrative, scholarly, and restoration departments.

Sistine Chapel

OPT.1: ROME & VATICAN MUSEUMS TOUR The Sistine Chapel is a chapel in the Apostolic Palace, the official residence of the pope, in Vatican City. Originally known as the 'Great Chapel', the chapel takes its name from Pope Sixtus IV, who restored it between 1473 and 1481. Since that time, the chapel has served as a place of both religious and functionary papal activity. Today, it is the site of the papal conclave, the process by which a new pope is selected. The fame of the Sistine Chapel lies mainly in the frescos that decorate the interior, most particularly the Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment, both by Michelangelo.

Pantheon

The Pantheon has represented the greatest expression of the glory of Rome for more than two thousand years. The story of the Pantheon is inseparably tied to the Eternal City. and been its image through the centuries. Built by Agrippa between 25 and 27 BC the Pantheon was a temple dedicated to the twelve Gods and to the living Sovran. Traditionally it is believed that the present building is result of the radical reconstruction by Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD. It is the only ancient Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries. In 608 Pope Boniface IV had the remains of many martyrs removed from the Christian catacombs and placed in the Pantheon. Thereafter the temple was officially converted to Christianity and named Saint Maria ad Martyres. The Pantheon was an inspiration to Raphael, one of the greatest architects of the Renaissance, and he requested it be his place of eternal rest.

Circus Maximus

The Circus Maximus was the largest stadium in ancient Rome. Popular chariot races were held here for almost a millennium. At one point the Circus could seat 250,000 people, one quarter of Rome's population. The origins of the Circus Maximus go back to the sixth century BC when Tarquinius Priscus, the fifth king of Rome, created a track between the Palatine and Aventine hills. The first permanent starting gates were created in 329 BC. In 174 BC the gates were rebuilt and seven wooden eggs were placed on top of the spina, the central wall in the arena. The eggs were used to count the number of laps; after each lap one egg was removed. In 33 BC seven bronze dolphins were added to the spina for the same purpose.

Trevi Fountain

Trevi Fountain is the most beautiful fountain in Rome. Measuring some 20 meters in width by 26 meters in height, Trevi Fountain is also the largest fountain in the city. The origins of the fountain go back to the year 19 B.C., in which period the fountain formed the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. The first fountain was built during the Renaissance, under the direction of Pope Nicholas V. The final appearance of the Trevi Fountain dates from 1762, when after many years of works at the hand of Nicola Salvi.

Piazza del Campidoglio

The Capitoline Hill is the smallest among the seven hills of Rome. You can find it near the Roman Forum. Even though it is the smallest hill in Rome, it played a huge part in the religious and political aspects of Rome since the founding of the city center. During the middle ages, the Capitoline Hill declined and formed a new square for Pope Paul III. This square is presently known as the Piazza del Campidoglio. It was the famous architect and artist Michelangelo Buonarroti who was commissioned to do the existing design of the square.

Spanish Steps

The 138 steps, also known as the “Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti”, was originally built to link the Spanish embassy to the Holy See at the base, to the church of Trinità dei Monti at the top. Designed in Baroque style by Italian architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi, Europe’s widest staircase was constructed between 1723 and 1725 thanks to the funding of French diplomat, Etienne Gueffier. The fresh water fountain at the bottom of the steps, Fontana della Barcaccia (which translates to the “fountain of the ugly boat” because of its half-sunken ship shape) was commissioned by Pope Urban III and built by father and son Bernini.

Marco was gracious and kind. His knowledge of Rome was unbelievable. He made Italy and Rome come alive for us. His humor and laughter kept our group laughing. How he drove with the busy Roman traffic was so appreciated. We absolutely loved the tour and Marco made it happen for us.

My family and I embarked in Norwegian Cruise in Rome on May 26th and purchased from Limousine Service in Italy our private transportation to and from Civitavecchia Port and also 10 hours of private tour in Rome with a tour guide. This was the best decision we have made. If you take a taxi or any other transportation to Civitavecchia Port, you will need to be dropped off in the entrance of the port, couple of miles away from where the cruises are located and take the shuttle bus or go walking with all our luggage as we saw many passengers doing that. But if you use Limousine Service they are allow to enter inside and take you all the way right in front of the port boarding area. Besides, the service of Limousine Service in Italy is excellent "7 stars". Since we booked their services the responses were very fast, the prices were fair. Before the pick up in Rome, the manager Nicola called us to advise the driver was arriving to our hotel. He did the same when we disembark from the cruise and advise the place where the driver was waiting for us. The driver Marco was amazing. He arrived on time in both pick ups. He made us spend a 10 hours very entertaining for his excellent good humor. He was hilarious. The private tour guide was also excellent and very profesional with a lot of knowledge of the history. I can honestly recommend the services of Limousine Service in Italy.

Our private tour was outstanding Our driver Sergio was very knowledgeable and gave us great pointers during our trip that saved us a lot of time. He recommended places to eat that were not tourist traps and showed us things that the general public typically has never seen. I would highly recommend this tour and driver

First, let me say that trying to see the highlights of Rome in one day is not for the faint of heart. It's pretty much like getting 2,300 years stuffed into you through your eyeballs and ears while moving all day. That being said, if you only have one day, this is the way to do it. Nicola is knowledgable at everything, from how to organize the time to make the most of each stop, to facts about the marble at each site and the history of Rome and the Vatican, to fitting in everything in the brief time allotted. He even ordered lunch ahead and dropped us off so we could literally walk in and sit down to a delicious meal in the middle of the day, complete with amazing pasta and wine. It was one of the highlights of the whole trip, and we did not spend one second waiting in any of the lines we sped past (and there were a lot of them, even in the off season). Absolutely worth the money so that you can concentrate on just enjoying the sights, rather than figuring out transportation, parking, ticketing, or any other tedious logistics and wasting valuable time. You also don't have to deal with the moo, moo, moo all day aspect of a tour bus group tour. Money well spent. Highly recommend.

We scheduled a private tour from Civitavecchia to Rome. The experience start to finish was very well done and I would highly recommend. Our driver was great, even gracious enough to stop and buy us coffee and a roll on our way into Rome because we skipped breakfast! Nicola was an amazing guide, not only extremely knowledgeable about all the sites and Rome in general, but knew all the short cuts to skip the crowds and get the most time possible at each stop. I would highly recommend this team and the tour. You'll be in great hands and it will be well worth it!

We used this company for two private car shore excursions in Rome and Naples on our recent cruise. They were terrific. Our drivers, Gabriele and Diego, were very pleasant. Our kids enjoyed the interaction. We saw all the key sights in Rome and then a private tour of Pompeii outside Naples. I would highly recommend this company.

Our family of 5 had only 9 hours off our cruise ship(including 1.25 hours drive each way from the port of Civitavecchia in which to see as much as possible of Rome...the greatest city on earth. We hired a private van and driver/guide in order to maximize our time. Fortune smiled on us when we were paired with Nicola - the world's greatest guide (in our opinion) who is genuinely one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. He was immediately engaging and easy to carry on a conversation with throughout the day. He fully customized our trip to our preferences and scheduled our stops efficiently. Without Nicola's exceptional driving, scheduling, knowledge and organization; we believe we would have only been able to see roughly 20-30% of the historical sites we were able to visit in our limited time frame. To give an idea of how much we and our kids (ranging from 7-13) were able to see in a limited time, we visited: The Colosseum... The San Callisto catacombs... San Giovanni della Pigna Church... The Pantheon... short lunch break... Capitoline Hill... The Roman Forum... The Spanish Steps... Trevi Fountain... Vatican City & St. Peter's Square. Not to mention the other treasures we drove by and learned about on our way to our stops: Piazza Navona, The Pyramid of Cestius, The original City Walls & Castle Saint Angelo to name a few. For approximately the same price that we would have paid for the 5 of us to do a ship's excursion on a bus loaded with strangers which saw only The Colosseum and the Forum, we rode in a spacious private Mercedes van and were treated to as much of Rome's history as we could soak up in a day with Nicola, who is a true gem. He navigated the streets incredibly efficiently and was knowledgable about even the tiniest historical details imaginable. By the end of the day we felt as if he were a part of our family. Nicola afforded us one of the most amazing days our family could ever hope to have experienced. (We genuinely thank you Nicola, we will never forget our day with you!) If you have only a day to see Rome, do it comfortably and go see as much as possible. Nicola and Limousine Service in Italy succeeded in making this possible for our family. We give them our highest possible recommendation.

Vielen Dank!
