Rome

(Pass by)

Rome is the capital city and a special comune of Italy (named Comune di Roma Capitale). Rome also serves as the capital of the Lazio region. With 2,879,728 residents in 1,285 km2 (496.1 sq mi), it is also the country's most populated comune. It is the fourth most populous city in the European Union by population within city limits. It is the centre of the Metropolitan City of Rome, which has a population of 4,355,725 residents, thus making it the most populous metropolitan city in Italy. Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, within Lazio (Latium), along the shores of the Tiber. The Vatican City (the smallest country in the world) is an independent country inside the city boundaries of Rome, the only existing example of a country within a city: for this reason Rome has been often defined as capital of two states.

Pantheon

Built by Agrippa between 25 and 27 BC, the Pantheon was a temple dedicated to the twelve Gods and to the living Sovran. Traditionally it is believed that the present building is the result of the radical reconstruction by Hadrian between 118 and 125 AD. The Pantheon is the only ancient Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries. It was an inspiration to Raphael, one of the greatest architects of the Renaissance, and he requested it be his place of eternal rest. Come discover the many facets of the impressive monument on a guided Pantheon tour.

Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona is one of the largest and most beautiful piazza squares in Rome with three impressive fountains, including la Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi with its large obelisk at the centre. The baroque church of Sant'Agnese in Agone provides an impressive backdrop. Surrounding the square are restaurants and street artists, painters and musicians who add a lively atmosphere to the scene. This page covers details of how to get to Piazza Navona plus self guided walks including the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. The reason for its long oval shape is that it was once the site of the Stadium of Domitian - where festivals and sporting events took place. The Navona Square was paved over in the 15th century to create what we see today. Despite the undoubted architectural delights and history of the place, for most people this is a pleasant place to hang out, have a drink or meal from the many restaurants that line the piazza and people watch.

Campo de' Fiori

The Piazza Campo dei Fiori, which was once a field of flowers, and thus the name, was paved in 1456 under Pope Callistus III. Thanks to the prominent buildings surrounding the piazza, such as Palazzo Orsini, the Campo de’ Fiori became a very popular part of Rome frequented by the most influential historical figures. Its popularity drew new businesses to the area, opening workshops, inns and taverns making this neighborhood one of the most prosperous of the city. Moreover, Campo de’ Fiori was the location where a horse market took place twice a week. Public executions took place in this square, which is nowadays commemorated by the impressive statue of Giordano Bruno, in the centre of the piazza. The Italian philosopher was burnt at the stake in 1600 for heresy. The monument was built in his honour in 1889.

Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps are a set of steps dating from 1723, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinita dei Monti at the top dominated by Trinita dei Monti Church. The steps are at the eastern end of the old city centre. From the base there is a maze of very narrow lanes crammed full with designer shops waiting to be explored. The Spanish Steps are still a place for artists, painters and poets to visit. Today, at the top of the Spanish Steps you will find a cluster of artists painting visitor’s portraits

Trevi Fountain

Trevi Fountain, Italian Fontana di Trevi, fountain in Rome that is considered a late Baroque masterpiece and is arguably the best known of the city’s numerous fountains. It was designed by Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762. According to legend, those who toss coins into its waters will return to Rome.

We used Rome In Limo on our Celebrity Med Cruise in July.  I could not recommend them more.  The drivers were excellent, friendly, and went out of their way to make us feel at home in their city.  Naples - Rome - Florence  Francesco was our guide in Rome and was the absolute best!  There were 6 of us, and he basically said where to you want to go and what do you want to see.  He gave us history and took us everywhere on our tour and then some.  He dropped us off so close, we were within steps of everything, from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain.  Others on the cruise complained of all the walking in the heat they had to do from the buses, but not us!  If we ever get to go back to Italy - Rome in Limo will be the first thing we book!

Nick was an excellent driver! I had heard all great things about Rome in Limo, and now I know that they are true! We plan to use them again in a few months.

We spent the most wonderful day in Rome thanks to Piero from Rome in Limo tours! He was waiting for us when we got off our ship with a lovely 6 person Mercedes van! Very clean and stocked with water and everything else to make our day as comfortable as possible! Peter was such a gentleman! He took us to all the highlights (how much of Rome can you see in a day?), and then took us to an authentic Italian restaurant for lunch where we enjoyed a feast! From there he took us to the Vatican where we met with our guide Deborah (also arranged through this company), who was amazing! She filled us in on so much detail about the Vatican! Because we had pre-purchased our Vatican tickets, we were able to walk right in and get the most of the two hours we had booked! Deborah was simply wonderful! Peter got us back to our ship with plenty of time to spare! Would not hesitate to use this company again! They were great!

Gary, picked us up in the port of Civitavecchia and drove us to many of the most iconic places in Rome. He was friendly, knowledgeable, funny, and very helpful with my two elderly parents, both in their 80’s... not only did we see so many places, but he was like having a personal guide, even though they technically are not your guides for the day. From Trevi fountain, to the pantheon, the basilica, plazas, and many more areas. It was wonderful to have a private excursion as opposed to the cruise ship excursions. The price for 5 people was actually cheaper, and well worth the experience. The best way to go. Plus Gary took us to an incredible local restaurant. Thanks Gary for making our trip so wonderful.

My daughter and I had only one day in Rome on a cruise. While I know we didn’t see all of it, we certainly feel like we did! I don’t know HOW Enrico fit so much into our day with hardly any walking but he did! So many tips and tricks and fabulous food recommendations as well. When we get to go back to Rome you can bet we will be requesting him. Fabulous enjoyable company and easy going as could be! Thank you Enrico you enriched and made EASY what could have been a crazy day!
