Your Itinerary

Santuario della Madonna di Monte Berico

The origins of the Sanctuary of Monte Berico are linked to the two apparitions of the Madonna to Vincenza Pasini, a woman who brought food to her husband who worked on the hill: the first on 7 March 1426, the second on 1 August 1428. The Madonna promised the end of the plague and asked that a church be dedicated to her in that place. So in 1428, in a few months, the first late Gothic church and a small monastery were built to house a religious community dedicated to welcoming pilgrims.

Vicenza

We will walk in the city along an itinerary entirely dedicated to the architect Andrea Palladio. Palazzo Iseppo da Porto, Casa Cogollo, Palazzo Chiericati and the Loggia Palladiana are just some of the monuments that we will have the pleasure of discovering together.

Basilica Palladiana

The Palladian Basilica, included since 1994 in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is the symbol of the city of Vicenza. The beating heart of Vicenza's political and economic activity, in medieval times the Palazzo della Ragione looked like a Gothic building, characterized by a huge hall on the upper floor and enlivened on the ground floor by an active group of shops. Following the collapse of the fifteenth-century loggias designed by Tommaso Formenton, in the sixteenth century the City Council found itself discussing the renovation of the building: the great names in architecture of the time were involved, from Giulio Romano to Sebastiano Serlio, from Jacopo Sansovino to Michele Sanmicheli. Despite such illustrious opinions, in March 1546 the Council approved the project of a local architect of just thirty-eight years of age, decidedly little known at the time: Andrea Palladio. He proposed an “elastic” structure…

Loggia del Capitaniato - World Heritage Site

In the Loggia del Capitaniato, as occurs in various Palladian works of the last decade, the composition is based on the expressive power of the giant order and on the exuberance of the plastic decoration, which give particular vigor to a work conceived as an expression of the power of the Republic Very serene.

Teatro Olimpico

The oldest covered theater in the world. Masterpiece and last work by Andrea Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza was commissioned in February 1580 by the Accademia Olimpica, a partnership of important personalities from Vicenza in the fields of literature, science and the arts, of which Palladio himself was a member. The project was inspired by the "old-fashioned" theater model, in the wake of the Renaissance rediscovery of Vitruvius' studies, and at the same time served as a self-celebratory place for the Vicenza aristocracy, inspired by the same classical ideals supported by the members of the Academy.

To have a very knowledgeable tour guide, who spoke English and German, which was extremely helpful for questions that came up. I also appreciated her punctuality, which is rare in Italy
