Your Itinerary

Castel dell'Ovo

Castel dell'Ovo, or in English, Egg Castle, is a castle, found on the peninsula of Megaride, on the Gulf of Naples. Its name comes from a legend about the Roman poet Virgil, who had a reputation in the Middle Ages as a great sorcerer and predictor of the future. In the legend, Virgil put a magical egg into the castle’s foundations to support the fortifications. Had this egg been broken, the castle would have been destroyed, followed by disastrous events for the city. It is the oldest standing fortification in Naples.

The bell tower, separated from the structure, was started in 1328, but completed only in the 16th century, when it was also equipped with five bells; these, which fell during the bombing of 1943, were put back in their place in 1949.
