Museo Galileo - Institute and Museum of the History of Science

The Institute and Museum for the History of Science is heir to a tradition of five centuries of scientific collecting, which has its origins in the central importance assigned by the Medici and Lorraine families to scientists and scientific instruments. The Medicean collection of scientific instruments was begun by Cosimo I (1519-1574), who housed it in the “Wardrobe” of the Palazzo Vecchio, known today as the "sala delle carte geografiche" (Map Room). With the foundation of the Accademia del Cimento (1657), inaugurated by Ferdinand II (1610-1670) and Leopold de\' Medici (1617-1675) for the purpose of conducting the experimental investigation of nature, the collection was enriched with new instruments designed mainly for thermometric, barometric, and pneumatic research. The Accademia was located in the Pitti Palace where all the instruments in the Medici collection were subsequently moved. After their decline during the Napoleonic occupation (1799-1814), the museum and its workshops were reorganized upon the return to power of the Lorraine Family. After the Unification of Italy, the collections were dispersed among several university departments. In 1922, thanks to the promoters of the "Group for the Preservation of National Scientific Heritage," the collections were rescued from abandonment. In 1927, thanks to their commitment, the Istituto di Storia delle Scienze (The Institute of the History of Science) was founded, with the goal of "collecting, cataloging, and restoring" the scientific collections. In 1929, the newborn Institute organized the First National Exhibition of the History of Science in Florence. In 1930, following the show, the University of Florence opened the permanent exhibition of the Istituto di Storia della Scienza at Palazzo Castellani to the public. It included the Medici-Lorraine collection of instruments. After the damage caused by the bombings that destroyed the bridges of the Lungarno at the end of the Second World War (1944-45), another hard blow was dealt to the collection by the flood of 1966. The instruments that were stored in the basement and ground floor of the Museo were seriously damaged. Thanks to international solidarity and the efforts of Maria Luisa Righini Bonelli, then-director of the Museum, it was possible to quickly carry out recovery of the instruments, reopen the exhibition rooms to the public, and focus again on library collecting and research activities.

The museum is great, you don’t need to be a scientist to understand the place. Be ready to spare 2 hours, interesting place.

Waste of money. There was no line to skip. It’s a way for Weekend in Italy to make money and for TripAdvisor/Viator to get their cut despite providing zero customer service. Just go to the museum and buy tickets which I saw multiple people do. Why/how did I see multiple people do that? Because I sat in the ticket office for a while contacting both Viator and Weekend in Italy trying to get the actual tickets. Viator is a joke and kept sending me a link to a pdf that says in all caps at the top “THIS IS NOT YOUR ENTRY TICKET”. Come on guys, it’s one simple job to justify your markup for the booking and they both screwed it up. Needless to say this all followed my tickets being booked for the wrong time and TripAdvisor app giving me a page unavailable error so I couldn’t manage the booking to adjust the time. Weekend in Italy was no help because they already got all they wanted, my money. They didn’t care. Luckily the museum doesn’t care what time your tickets are for because again, the skip the line is a joke and rip off. Oh, the actual museum is ok. 3/5 stars. Wasn’t able to download their app to get an audio guide so the museum was really boring and not a lot to read. Maybe more exciting with the app, but not too expensive, no crowds like Academa gallery and kept us busy for 1-2 hours.

The Gallileo museum is well worth visiting. Its full of ancient scientific artifacts, including telescopes, microscopes, clocks, astralobes and many more. It's not massive, to look at everything allow around 2 hours.

Beware, this is a scam, me and my family didn’t receive any tickets, so we had to buy them again at the museum. We asked for a refund but unfortunately they stole sour money. There wasn’t even a line at the museum. The museum staff told us they didn’t worked with this operator anymore. shame on trip advisor for letting people be scammed.

The museum said they do not recognize Viator vouchers and would not let us in. Others in line had the same issue. We contacted Viator customer service who said they would not refund our money. Do NOT use Viator.

Tickets were sent to my phone. No pick up needed. We did arrive after our half hour window time slot and did not have an issue entering the museum. Unlike the other museums, we walked right up, scanned our tickets and walked in.

Tour operator only provided our vouchers which the Museum would not accept. The tickets were supposed to be emailed sepárele y but they never arrived. We contacted Viator regarding the issue and they did nothing for us. We ended up purchasing 2 more tickets at the door. 😡

Very frustrating that we had to make at least five attempts to download the ticket PDF from TripAdvisor and Viator. The people at Galileo were unable to help us so we ended up having to pay twice for the tickets and waste at least 45 minutes trying to get the tickets on pdf. We will be seeking a full refund and would not recommend travelers to use this. Furthermore, the price of Entry to Galileo was 10 euros but the Viator price was 18 Euros per person?!

We had an emergency and needed to switch our ticket to another date, but the company was not accommodating and therefore we lost our money. Tickets should be able to be exchanged if needed. Thank you

The Museum would not honor our voucher. Had to buy tickets. I will request refund. Also, there was no line to skip. Viator charged $18 for ticket that cost 10 euros at the door. The museum was great but Viator was very disappointing in this case
