The Uffizi building itself is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture built between 1560 and 1580 by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de' Medici to accommodate the offices of the Florentine magistrates. Francesco I de Medici decided to turn the Uffizi into a gallery to keep the works of art owned by him. With the transformation of the Uffizi, the first and oldest museum in Europe was born, not being freely open to the public, but still visited upon request.
