We had a wonderful time with our tour guide Sasa! He was so friendly and knowledgeable, and he made the tour personal for our group. Our drivers were friendly and polite, and helped us when we had an issue without tickets. A wine tasting with lunch was the perfect end to our day.

Sasa brought Pompeii to life. He was so engaging and made our experience in Pompeii one to remember. He really made sure to provide great context and background at everything we were looking at it. It was not just a point and look tour, but more of painting a picture in our minds of what life was like in Pompeii. Sasa is the best tour guide we have ever had and I am so grateful we got that experience with him.

Having a tour starting with a tardy pickup at our Positano hotel and driving the 1-1/2 hrs to Pompeii is a waste of valuable vacation time. Pompeii tour was excellent and fascinating thanks to our expert guide, Sasa, who creatively set the stage to understand life at Pompeii and help us visualize the horror of the eruption that fateful day. Two hrs was not enough and I credit Sasa with five stars. Then the rest of the tour went downhill from there. Vesuvius was a tourist trap with a steep walk on the path to the top where you could not see the volcano. Crowds and buses vying for parking was a mess. It was a total waste of time. The lunch and wine tasting even worse with no a/c in the room with nearby tables left not cleared. The food was a ‘1’ and the server refilled our same single wineglass with average wine. If you didn’t finish your sample, I think she would have poured the next sampling on top of it. The group of 10 of us clearly felt the same and wanted to leave and we had to search for someone to put us out of our misery and direct the way out. Then the 1-1/2 hr return drive back to Positano. Do yourself a favor. Try and see Pompeii separately and avoid the extra time driving time. And…skip this tour…you will thank me…

My recommendation is to book a tour without the lunch and wine tasting. Trying to do all three left no time to enjoy any of them. The lunch spot was more of a road stop cafeteria and having to leave two hours to get there and have a mediocre lunch left not enough time at Vesuvius for us to do the trek to the top.

We were able to be picked up from our hotel and taken to the excursion, which was great. The Pompei tour guide was informative and showed us the entire west end of the city but there really was so much more to be seen. We somewhat expected this though, knowing the day trip only included 2 hours of touring Pompei. Pompei was huge and is like a maze. We were happy to have a tour guide leading us around. I was really surprised to see how much artwork was able to be recovered and learn about how beautiful the structures once were. We unfortunately could not see Mt Vesuvius, as there was intense rain earlier that week that damaged the trails. However, the winery was great! It had beautiful views, great food, and wine! They had a prefixed menu and it was great not to have to worry about paying for the lunch in addition to the tour. I liked the winery so much that I hope to get to go back someday.

Overall I rated this tour a 2 star. The original driver that picked us up was inviting and polite. The guide for the Pompeii tour was great but the tour did not allow time to go into the museum shop for souvenirs and it would have been nice to purchase a book or something from Pompeii. Then there was confusion after the Pompeii tour ended as several small groups combined and went on to other tours. Our tour including a lunch and wine tasting then a “walk” at Mt Vesuvius. The van we took in the morning had air conditioning which was great and what the tour advertised but the van in the afternoon did not have air conditioning and the trip to the winery, mt Vesuvius and back to Positano was hot, smelly and completely miserable! When we arrived at the winery the group had too many people than was accounted for which meant either the tour group Mis counted or other people accidentally joined not understanding were they needed to go. At no time did one from the tour group ask for a voucher or verified who should be on what tour and if they had that would have easily defused the situation! So lunch ran late because of the confusion which meant the walk at my Vesuvius would be affected. When we got to mt Vesuvius a guide told us to walk in a steep hill with lots to of loose rocks which was really hard to walk on plus no were in the tour description did they mention a “hike” or to wear certain shoes with traction….. most people in poor health or shape would not have enjoyed that hike. The tour really should list basic requirements. The long drive back to Positano was hot and miserable and it was late when we finally did return. Long story short I would NOT recommend using this tour group as they were unorganized and a vehicle that did not have air conditioning when they advertised they would provide is not acceptable. Really disappointing.

Pompeii was incredible!! Our tour guide, Francesco, was funny and very knowledgeable about the ruins. His English was easy to understand. The wine tasting seemed quite disorganized and took longer than expected. Not necessarily the fault of the winery but our shuttle driver didn’t give us any instructions when we were dropped off. When we left the winery and drove to Vesuvius, we didn’t even get to see the mouth of the volcano.. just hiked for about 2 miles to then turn around and go back. It was pretty lame, and the guide didn’t teach us too much, but was quick to ask for a tip at the end. If we did it all over again, we would’ve just done Pompeii.

We ultimately got everything we signed up for, and despite an unexpected bus breakdown on route to Vesuvius we got to our wine tasting and lunch and received a free bottle of wine!
