Wonderful tour! Ilaria was our tour guide -- in fact she was our guide for 3 Joy of Rome tours -- and she was wonderful. Very knowledgeable. English was great. This tour was wonderful because it was off the beaten path without 1000s of tourists, but yet it was easy to get to and taught us something new. We highly recommend!!

This was one of the best tours we did on our holiday and the reason for this was our tour guide Francesca. Her incredible knowledge, beautiful personality and animation made this tour so enjoyable. Clearly she loves what she does and her passion for history and archaeology shines through in everything she shares. I would highly recommend any tour with Francesca.

Today we enjoyed a wonderful tour with Francesca of the association "Joy of Rome. The Basilica of S. Clemente is really interesting but Francesca's guide enriched the tour a lot thanks to her competence and enthusiasm. In fact when you are with her you can understad how much she loves her job and how big is her interest to deepen what she is explaining. I am looking forward to enjoy another tour with Francesca and her association also becouse They organize very interesting and particular tours in Rome. Thank you very much to Francesca.

This was our second tour with this company and the wonderful Francesca D, who is so knowledgeable and brings Rome to life. Our first visit to Rome was 18 months ago where we booked a private tour to the Vatican with this company which was amazing, we then did another tour with another company which was not so good therefore with our return to Rome we emailed Joy of Rome. We wanted a specific morning of the Palatine and forum finished off with the underground levels at San clement. What is great about Francesca is that she listens, when she found out I like mosaics she made sure to show us some special places on our journey. Joy of Rome are very easy to deal with and have great communication and answer all emails very quickly. Our tour was around 4 hours and it flew by. It is not cheap but worth every penny, I would not hesitate to recommend. Francesca also gave us some great tips of where to go and what to see. See you again in another 18 months!!

My brother and I travelled around Europe for three weeks. The underground tour of Rome was easily the most delightful tour we had ever been on. Francesca guided us through history as if it were a suspenseful storybook, bursting with living, breathing characters. The lives of interesting people were wrapped up with the many lives of Rome. She was super informative, super engaging, with a sense of humour and passion that only made me want to know more. I learned so much and enjoyed every moment of it. But we also learned to view the city differently. We saw not just a snapshot of Rome's ancient past, but also its progression through time. Centuries of life built on top of each other, forgotten and now remembered again. I realised that the city, as it is now, is not far removed from its colourful history at all. Ours is just another layer on the lasagna. Realising that just put everything we'd seen so far into context. This was an enriching tour for sure. I recommend it highly to anyone. Expect to smile like a dork through the whole thing.

I decided to do this tour, which otherwise we could have done on our own, because I thought the individual tour would add a lot of depth and historical information to these two lessor known but fascinating places: San Celement Church and the Celian Houses. It was going to be a small group with just 4 total, but the other couple did not show up, so it ended up being a private tour. Our tour guide Michaela was very friendly and knowledgeable, but seemed a little preoccupied during the tour and didn't necessarily provide as much history or explanation as I may have thought. This was an afternoon tour, and I too may have over planned our day as we were pretty exhausted by this time as well. I still enjoyed both venues very much, and could have explored much more, but I guess I was just expecting to leave feeling a bit more fulfilled with the history and knowledge shared during the tour. San Clemente church had quite a bit of school age children inside, which our tour guide purposely tried to dodge us around, so I left a little rushed and maybe missed out on a couple rooms. I think we were the only visitors at the Celian houses when we were there. A real surprise treat, was that when we visited the completely empty Basilica of John & Paul there was a old caretaker inside and he gave us a little impromptu tour behind the alter, to a storage room that had fresco's painted on the wall, and to a closed side chapel. Our guide was completely shocked by this and said she had never experienced anything like that before. She gave him a tip for his generosity. At the end of our tour Michaela helped us hail a cab so we wouldn't have to walk home on our very tired feet. It was a good tour, and I think was well worth the value of the cost for a private tour, it just wasn't one of my top tours experienced.

Incredibly interesting, an amazing experience, very unique and different. We had a marvolous guide who knew perfectly well all that there was to know about the sites and also in a fun and enjoyable way. The 3 hour tour felt like one hour. Great experience.

As usual Viators organisation was spot on. Having visited Rome previously and yesterday done the sights via the Hop on hop off bus -organised through Viator- the underground Rome was different. There were only 4 of us on the tour with Franscesca local company Joys of Rome so it was intimate and very personal. It was fascinating to follow the transformation of some of the buildings through time as their purpose and structures were altered. Although we'd been through St Clemente church and catacombs the day before Franscesca ,an Arts and history major, gave us a completely different slant on things and homed in on different aspects of the buildings.

Ask for Francesca!!! Francesca was extremely pleasant, knowledgeable and professional. We've been on many many tours with Viator and AMEX around the world and she definitely stands out as one of the very BEST. The tour was enlightening and gave us a different perspective of Rome from our last visit 2 yrs ago.
