Your Itinerary

Foro di Traiano

We will begin at Trajan's columb and make our way through Piazza Venezia before walking up the gently sloping steps to Piazza del Campidoglio to see the marvelous design of the square that was all imagined by the great Michelangelo, and now home to the famous Capitoline Museums.

Teatro di Marcello

From here we walk to the Theater of Marcellus, often jokingly referred to as the little Colosseum. Though architecturally similar to the Colosseum, the Theatre of Marcellus is slightly older, dating all the way back to 12BC and it did not house any of the blood sports, and now is home to a few lucky residents who live in the apartments above the theater.

Fontana delle Tartarughe

On our walk we will see the many restaurants in the neighborhood and stop for a taste of traditional Kosher gelato. Then we will have a short walk to the magnificent Fontana delle Tartarughe (The Turtle Fountain), a true masterpiece of the late Italian Renaissance, where you will discover how it was famously constructed in just one day.

Tempio Maggiore di Roma

Constructed in 1555, this is the oldest Jewish Ghetto. The pope revoked all rights granted to the Roman Jews, and barred them from all types of trade and the ability to own real estate. In spite of this, the Jewish community thrived inside developing business trade, a unique and wonderful cuisine inside their walls and even their own dialect of Italian. The Great Synagogue, still the third largest in Europe, functions today as a place of prayer and a vital cultural reference point for the entire Jewish community of Rome.

The Portico Of Octavia

From here it is a very short walk to the Porticus Octaviae, an enormous structure built by the emperor Augustus in honor of his sister Octavia. From the 15th to early 20th century it was the home to Rome’s fish market. It is from here that we enter the Ghetto itself.

Isola Tiberina

Concluding at Tiber Island where past and present slip seamlessly into one, the island was used by the ancient Romans as a hospital with the river helping them as a natural barrier aiding to stop the spread of disease, and one of Rome’s best hospitals can still be found on that site today. Giving a beautiful view of the river, the island is conveniently placed between the Ghetto and the local neighborhood of Trastevere and is well connected to get back to any part of the city.

Wonderful tour! Given by a history professor, it was both informative and moving. Much more than I expected.

The guide was an American.. which was surprising but made the tour easier without a language barrier. He was knowledgeable and appropriately sober in the right spots of learning about some of the tragedies that this community experienced over hundreds of years.

Paul was a terrific guide. As a history professor, his knowledge of the modern day Jewish experience and the recent as well as ancient history was excellent. This tour was more than the Jewish ghetto area - it encompassed ancient Roman sites as well as the Vittorio Emanuele II monument and Mussolini's headquarters. I've been to Rome several time, including living there as a student and I learned quite a bit. Paul took his time and answered all our questions and we even got a kosher gelato toward the end of the tour! Highly recommended!

The tour was excellent, and the guide was very knowledgable. I love the major sights in Rome but wanted to get away from the more touristy areas and learn about the history of the Jews in Rome, the treatment of the Jews over the years, and the modern day area of what used to be Jewish ghetto. The tour and the tour leader did all those things and more. Some thought there was too much lecturing and not enough time in the actual Jewish ghetto and that is not wrong, but I really enjoyed it all.

They tried to change the time of the tour from 10am to 2pm the day before tour but my daughters train was at 4pm so we couldn't go. they charged my card anyway? That's pretty much like stealing.

The tour was wonderful. It gave us a different perspective on all that we had seen and learned touring in Rome. We were particularly lucky that we were only the 2 of us so it was a ”private” tour. I highly recommend this tour.

We signed up for a small group tour, and it turned out to be a private tour, which was lucky for us. It gave us the opportunity to ask a multitude of questions. Daniel, our guide, was incredibly well-reserved in all thing Italian history, and he ably fielded our queries on a wide an deep range of topics as we walked, well beyond the scope of the tour. I would recommend him highly. The program was comprehensive and it gave us a great context for the rest of our touring and learning in Italy. And it was very fun — maybe a bit hot but nothing that an Aperol Spritz couldn’t help!

We enjoyed this informative tour. It is a pretty part of Rome with some confronting facts. We had a lovely gelato on Tiber Island. After the tour you can take a stroll on the other side of the Tiber. Our tour guide was Angela and she was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful with suggestions of interesting places to lookout for while in Rome.

Eric O

Angela, one of the tour company owners, gave us a 1st class tour all the way. We all were a small group of about 8 adults and she began by giving us a timeline e of Roman history and key milestones in Jewish history and where they fit within the overall timeline. Her understanding and knowledge were incredible. Her passion in ensuring that the Jewish history is not forgotten is to be commended. She walked us through the Jewish Ghetto ensuring that we had a through understanding and pointed out very important facts/sites along the way. She ended the tour with a gelato stop (included in the tour price) and gave us some tips of where to eat, go, etc. outside this specific tour. A terrific and educational tour and a must if you are in Rome!

Paul was a wealth of knowledge. He spoke non-stop about the history of the Jews in Rome. I think Paul would have talked another 2 hours if we let him. The day was extremely hot and humid but our group got a fantastic tour
