Your Itinerary

Su Nuraxi

Your private tourist guide will pick you up at the scheduled time by his comfortable minivan. During the 45 minutes route to Barumini, it will be tell you about the main features of the island and the landscape we will see from the car's windows. Once arrived, we will visit the imposing nuraghe "Su Nuraxi" and its village: an Archaeological complex whose most ancient traces are date back to around the 1500 b.c. We will begin from the village, where you will see various types of housing structures, the round ones, with a central courtyard, that go back to the nuragic period, and the rectangular ones, that belong to the punic-roman period. Noteworthy are a central court house with a spa environment perhaps home to a domestic cult, and the big meeting hut. Then, we will enter the real nuraghe, that can be reached by an iron ladder which leads to a tiny entry, placed at 7 metres of height. There we will visit the central tower, called “mastio”, that originally measured 20 metres in height, and the 4 side towers. The whole of the 5 towers makes a housing complex that, for its grandeur, reminds us of a medieval castle. After the visit to su Nuraxi, you will be taken to the place where your excursion began. The tour can also be enriched by choosing one of the different available options.

This is an amazing tour. Our guide, Alessandro, has grown up near Cagliari and is passinate and proud of his Sardinian heritage. In addition to the impressive historical nuragic buildings, Alessandro showed us Sardinian plants and introduced the towns we passed by. He is very knowledgable about the archaeological and histical aspects of Su Nuraxi. His love for the local culture and history was also infectious. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

Our guide, Alessandro, was fantastic and extremely knowledgeable. He has many years' of experience doing this particular tour and has in-depth knowledge about this area subject matter.

We booked this tour because we (my daughter, son-in-law and I) were eager to explore the countryside beyond Cagliari and curious to see the Nuraghe. Alessandro guided us expertly, first taking us to the Giara Plateau and then to Su Nuraxi of Barimini. As we made the brief trek to see the wild horses, he educated us about the geology and plant life of the region. And once we arrived at the high basalt Plateau, we had a chance to pause and take in the scene, with the beautiful vista and the horses tranquilly enjoying their watering hole. From Giara, it was about a 15-minute drive to Barimini. Alessandro helped us understand the layout of the village and fortress, what we know of the Nuragic civilization, and how the different rooms and passageways were probably used. On the drive back, he continued to answer every question we could think of—about Sardinia’s history, language, food, and culture. The tour was the highlight of our trip, and Alessandro could not have been a more knowledgeable or gracious guide. What a great day!

Our guide, Alessandro, was excellent. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history of Cagliari. First he took us on a tour of the main historical parts of Cagliari before we drove out to Barumini. His knowledge of the Nuraghi was amazing 👏. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience seeing the Nuraghi and walking and climbing into the ancient towers. We were very fortunate to be the only people in the tour so we had undivided attention. Our questions were answered in full. I would highly recommend this tour especially with Alessandro. Thankyou Alessandro for a very memorable tour.

This is the only current nuraghe WHS. The largest of them all (we visited half a dozen around the island), it has significant settlement outlines and a reasonably well-preserved central tower complex. The visit is only possible with a guide, occasionally in English but more frequently in Italian. There are three challenging passages to navigate (which largely justifies the need to regulate the flow of visitors). Impressive enough on balance, although not being able to explore on your own is a bummer. You can sneak a few minutes of self-exploration of exterior parts after the guide declares the tour to be over. The ticket allows entry to a couple of related museums for those who have time.

Alessandro was an excellent guide and told us so much about the history of the Su Nuraxi Barumini. We also chose the sightseeing of Cagliari and saw many intersting sites. We highly recommend this tour.

Alessandro was amazing both in preparing us in advance of what we were to expect and in the information he delivered during the half day excursion to the Barumini site and the Giara plateau.

Really enjoyable experience, lots of history and wonderful view. We went there in a very windy day but we could not really ask for more.

My family and I had a fantastic experience with Alessandro; it was one of the best days of our week-long stay in Cagliari. Alessandro picked us up promptly at our hotel; his van was clean and comfortable (and comfortably air conditioned). On our way to Su Naraxi, he talked about Sardinian history, explaining a bit about what we were going to see. We arrived at Su Nuraxi early enough in the morning that we weren't there with crowds and felt that we had the place almost to ourselves as we explored. Su Nuraxi Barumini is SO worth the trip! It was incredibly interesting and unlike anything we had ever seen before. When we went to the National Archeological Museum in Cagliari the following day, everything made so much more sense to us having been to the Su Nuraxi site. After visiting Su Nuraxi, we took a ten minute drive to the tiny village of Gergei to visit Sinnos Formaggi, a rural mini dairy. We arrived around noon, so the streets of Gergei were quite quiet (lunch and siesta), but it was wonderful seeing what felt like a very typical Sardinian village and such a contrast to Cagliari. Sam, the cheese maker, met with us and showed us the tools of his craft. It's a one-man operation with a very small storefront, but he makes at least six or seven types of Pecorino (which we learned is a term for all sheep milk cheeses); the milk comes from the sheep raised by his wife's family a few miles away. We visited the cheese cave in the back of the family's courtyard, saw their garden in which they were growing a variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers, and then were treated to a fantastic cheese tasting in a dining room off of the garden -- a variety of Sam's cheeses along with local breads, jams made by his wife, fruits and vegetables, wine ... it was a feast and the perfect way to end our outing. On the drive back to Cagliari, we learned that Alessandro is a trained sommelier who also offers wine and olive oil tastings -- that will definitely be our next outing with Alessandro when we return to Sardinia! In all, I cannot recommend Alessandro and this outing highly enough!

Alessandro was an amazing guide! He knew so much about the site itself, and shared so much of his knowledge with us about the island of Sardinia (from history to the best foods to try). I couldn’t imagine visiting this site without Alessandro - he made such an ancient place come to life! Must-do tour if you are in Sardinia.
