Basilica di Santa Chiara

(Pass by)

The Basilica of Saint Clare is a church dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi and founder of the Order of Poor Ladies, known today as the Order of Saint Clare.

Chiesa Nuova

Erected in 1615 on the remains of a building believed to be the home of St. Francis. The building’s architecture design is from the Renaissance period. The façade, built of brick, is divided by four pillars supporting a Doric entablature, with attic gable, above which rises a hemispherical dome.

Piazza del Comune

Located in the place where the ancient Roman Forum stood, dominated by the imposing Rocca Maggiore, the rectangular square begins at the end of Corso Mazzini which connects it to the Basilica of Santa Chiara. Immediately on the right you can admire the sixteenth-century "fountain of the three lions", revisited in 1762 by Giovanni Martinucci.

Santa Maria sopra Minerva

The Temple of Minerva is an ancient Roman building. It currently houses a church, Santa Maria sopra Minerva, built in 1539 and renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century. The temple was built in the 1st century by will of Gnaeus Caesius and Titus Caesius Priscus, who were two of the city's quattuorviri and also financed the construction.

I highly recommend this tour with Alessandra. She was so knowledgeable and passionate about her city and she paced the tour perfectly for us - we included an 87yr old lady! She made every part so comfortable and problem free. We really enjoyed her company.

We met the wonderful Alessandra last week for a private tour of Assisi including the Basilica. We are a family of 5, with kids ages 8, 12, and 14. I'm an artist and this was not my first experience in Assisi, so Alessandra had her work cut out for her to engage my interests as well as the kids. She was amazing, incredibly knowledgeable, personable, and fun to talk to. We learned so much and I left with a filled-in picture of the context for what we were seeing, and deeply inspired. We did 5 different tours in the last couple of weeks in two different countries, and Alessandra was our absolute favorite.

We did the part-day walking tour of Assisi with Umbria con Me, and we were so fortunate to do it with Allessandra. She grew up in Assisi and is deeply knowledgeable and passionate about its history. But even more, she is very skillful at communicating that knowledge, reminding me of the very best art history instructors I saw at college. She was also very willing to talk off-script as we walked, recommending a place for lunch, discussing the working environment for a guide in Italy and the EU, and other much-appreciated digressions. If we are fortunate enough to get back to Umbria again (and we so want to!) we will definitely connect again with Davide and Umbria con Me and hope that all of his guides are as good a Allessandra!
