Your Itinerary

Roman Forum

It is a rectangular forum surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. Citizens of the ancient city referred to this space, originally a marketplace, as the Forum Magnum, or simply the Forum.

Admission Included

Tempio di Romolo

(Pass by)

It is another rare example of a well-preserved Roman monument. It's intact because it was turned into the entrance to the Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano, still functioning today

Casa delle Vestali

It was the residence of Vestal Virgins, located behind the circular Temple of Vesta at the eastern edge of the Roman Forum, between the Regia and the Palatine Hill. The domus publica, where the Pontifex Maximus dwelled, was located near the Atrium until that role was assumed by the emperors.

Tempio di Saturno

(Pass by)

Its ruins stand at the foot of the Capitoline Hill at the western end of the Roman Forum. The original dedication of the temple is traditionally dated to 497 BC, but ancient writers disagreed greatly about the history of this site.

Basilica of Maxentius

It is an ancient building in the Roman Forum. It was the largest building in the Forum, and the last Roman basilica built in the city.

Basilica Julia

It was a structure that once stood in the Roman Forum. It was a large, ornate, public building used for meetings and other official business during the Roman Empire.

Palatine Hill

It is one of the most ancient parts of the city and has been called "the first nucleus of the Roman Empire." The site is now mainly a large open-air museum while the Palatine Museum houses many finds from the excavations here and from other ancient Italian sites.

Admission Included

Piazza del Colosseo

It is a square in the center of Rome between Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Claudia. It is located on the border of rione Monti, Campitelli and Celio districts. The square can be reached from the Colosseo Metro Station on the B line of the Rome Metro.

Arch of Constantine

(Pass by)

Built in 315AD and noted by its triple arches, this structure commemorates Constantine's victory over Maxentuis.

Colosseum

Perhaps the best-preserved of the monuments of ancient Rome, this huge marble structure was built to hold more than 50,000 spectators to witness bloody contests of might and the slaughter of wild beasts.

Claudia is an art historian and was full of knowledge and colorful stories. She made the historic sites come alive. We loved this tour.

Our guide, Thomas, was not good. He was friendly but kept going off on tangents and wasn't goid at answering questions directly.

The tour was most informative and interesting. Guido provided info to allow us to understand the significance of the ruins and gave us an outstanding background of the culture of ancient Rome. He did an excellent job guiding us around the Forum, Palatine and the Colosseum on a rainy day and he did his best to keep us both under cover and apart from the crowds.

Eugenia was a great guide. Intermingled with the history were stories about life in Rome. The ruins of the Forum came to life. Our excursion through Palatine Hill gave a real sense of the life and opulence of an emperor. Through the entire tour Eugenia kept the group engaged and was a great story teller.

I am writing this review because a lot of things I haven't found about Rome, I only had to discover it by myself. The best time to visit is: January or April. Please make sure your visit is not during holidays or Christmas when there are either crowds or closed areas. Have some small change (1 euro) for the toilets. Beware that the toilets have flushing buttons that you push with your foot. It may happen that even the water taps function with pedals on the floor, which you activate with your feet. Avoid toilets at busy sightseeing places, they could be a little messy and dirty. Depending where do you come from you will pay an extra fee for the internet use in the Vatican area or city. We made print screens on our phones and used offline maps or printed maps to get around near the Vatican city. Or another good idea is to put your phone in airplane mode. Check before arriving to Rome with your phone provider if you will pay extra on your internet. If you book a tour, please check the meeting point in advance or a day before. Book tours because this is the only way you can skip the line and make most of your time. The skip the line is not really skip the line because you still have to stay in line for the metal detector and security. But with a guide and your group you can enter faster. The guides are already locally known. We couldn't really believe how full with tourists was whole Rome: Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Roman Forum, Vatican museum, Sistine chapel and St. Peter's Basilica. Our guide for a tour said they have ca. 500 tourists per day (in January) and in summer there are 2000 people per day. We were in Rome between 2-6 January 2024. Public transportation schedules you can only find in apps not in the metro or bus stations. Tickets can be bought in metro stations: for 24, 48 hours or for one direction. If asking for directions in the city or in shops try to learn a few words in Italian in advance. They may understand you but the may answer back in italian. We chose to eat at: Good places that we could recommend: L'Osteria de Memmo (italian restaurant), Venchi (ice cream), Mizio's (Streetfood). We don't recommend: Al Boschetto Hostaria (oily crunchy pizza). In the evening the restaurants do get a little crowded. After taking a tour in St. Peter's Basilica, there is a nice souvenir shop as you exit. It is on your left, spanning two floors, near a toilet and some water fountains. In Rome, you can find many small fountains from which you can drink water. Stop signs for crossing the street also have a yellow color when you can cross. From Fiumicino Airport, you can buy a round-trip train ticket (Leonardo Express: 30 Euro per person), saving you time and nerves when returning to the airport. It's the fastest way to get from the airport to Rome's "Termini" train station. At the Fiumicino Airport loved the big direction signs. It saves time and stress if you create a list for every trip and save it in your phone as a note, including necessary items like clothes and accessories. After your trip, note which things were unnecessary. This is helpful for future similar trips. Record ratings for hotels, trip bookings, or restaurants on your phone. After your trip, it's much easier to copy-paste them when needed to rate the places.

The tour started in the Roman Forum and ended in the Colosseum. Our guide John Tinto was very knowledgeable and you can really tell that he's passionate about his job. The tour went into a lot of the history and ties the importance of the locations together, so you can really appreciate everything within the historical context. On top of that, John explained everything in a way that was easy to understand even if you're not familiar with the history. I'd definitely recommend this tour for people interested learning about the history of ancient Rome.

We really enjoyed the tour . The tour guide was an archeologist and it was very very knowledgeable. We were a small group of people and it was easy to follow.
