Your Itinerary

Perugia

Perugia is a city full of charme and history. Every ancient gate, alley, piazza, palazzo and church will capture your imagination; and every museum and gallery will impress you with a sense of history, culture and art. Perugia is not just a stuffy old showcase of the ancient, it also has a young, vibrant and energetic feel. Perugia is the site of many festivals and concerts, the most important of which are the annual fall Chocolate festival and the summer Umbria Jazz festival, lending the city to a chic and urbane atmosphere unmatched by other Italian cities. Meeting point will be at Piazza Italia, from there we will go first exploring the different strata of Rocca Paolina – the so called 'Perugia underground'. Once back to the city centre, there will be a stop at a famous old fashioned but very traditional coffee shop for an espresso or a cappuccino topped with hand whipped cream. The tour will focus on the main fountain together with the other buildings standing in the square.

Rocca Paolina

The Rocca Paolina, or Paolina Fortress, is right in the historical centre of Perugia and one can enter via a door at Porta Marzia or the escalator system that connects Piazza Italia with Piazza Partigiani.

For first time visitors to Perugia I HIGHLY recommend this tour.We were so lucky to have the lovely Marika to show us around below and above this beautiful city. She was highly knowledgeable but also FUN..There is a lot of historical information to take on board when trying to understand how Perugia began but she showed us everything with such patience and without any rush or worry about time constraint. She gave us some top class tips for restaurants which became the highlights of our wonderful short stay in the area. She thought it was very special that we were from Cumbria (UK) visiting Umbria (Italy) and drew so many interesting Roman connections between the two distant regions..so much we have since researched and all fact!!Thanks so much Marika!!

Our guide was wonderful. It was pouring rain when the tour started so he changed the plans and took us to a museum. When the weather cleared up, we finished the tour. Great time and a great introduction to Perugia.

Elizabeth was so lovely! She arrived perfectly on time at the meeting point, interacted so sweetly with our 1 year old son, and gave us such a depth of historical context that made the city come alive. She took our energy level and physical capabilities into account and walked slowly, even waiting happily while we changed a diaper. We loved being with her and recommend you book too!

How to make sense of the centuries of change is a huge challenge. My guide, Marica, brought macro and micro details to life for me. Her personal warmth and her intellectual passion for what it means to be human were a true delight.
