Archaeological Park of Paestum

Do not miss the opportunity to visit a place unknown to many, the Greek ruins of Paestum. The three Greek temples of Paestum, built between the sixth and fifth centuries BC, are, together with those of Athens and Agrigento, the best preserved temple buildings from the classical age. Since the eighteenth century the site has attracted travelers and artists such as Piranesi and Goethe. Since 1998, Paestum has been a UNESCO heritage site. The construction of the temples began a few decades after the foundation of the city of Paestum, which was originally called Poseidonia, around 600 BC. The temples are located in the central part of the city, which extends over 120 hectares and is surrounded by a wall, also among the best in terms of conservation that we know. Between the temples was placed the "market", that is the central square where the assemblies of citizens were held and the tomb (empty, actually) of the mythical founder of Paestum was venerated.

Paestum was excellent. Incredibly well preserved Greek temples in Italy: older and better preserved than the Parthenon. The buffalo farm was also enjoyable and the cheese there was lovely. In terms of value, I note that the tour price really just covers the transport and about an hour or 90 minutes of a guide’s time. Everything else is extra. As such, it’s quite expensive. I was also a little frustrated that the description referred to a swim at a secret or secluded beach but our driver told us this was no longer included. He eventually relented but we only got 20 minutes at a rather busy public beach. Still a very good day though

Tony was great -friendly, informed, on-time, considerate, great English, passionate about the history of the area. He made reservations for us for lunch and made sure we had a wonderful, interesting day. This was definitely one of our best days in Italy. I highly recommend this tour.

Tony was a great driver. He was friendly, considerate, on time, passionate about his homeland and it's history, and truly invested in us having a wonderful, fascinating day. His English is excellent. He thoughtfully made lunch reservations for us at the small mozzarella farm, and we had a great lunch. Paestum was amazing. Tony made clear he is not a Paestum tour guide, but encouraged us to ask questions. He showed and educated us about the site of an important battle in World War II. I highly recommend Tony's services.

Tony was prompt, fun, with great information about Paestum and the history of the area. His driving made us feel very safe on narrow mountain roads. The car was very clean and well maintained. A very positive experience.

Tony made the journey from Sorrento to Paestum pleasant and informative. This was much more preferable than the option of six-plus hours of train travel, and Tony was knowledgeable about the many small towns on the route (and let us nap a bit on the way back). Paestum is extraordinary, and the size of the area covered within the ancient city walls is amazing. The side trip (to the beach, theWWII Allied landing memorial , and the buffalo dairy farm made the day perfect. You really can’t beat cheese made 50m from your table, and the dishes were creative and excellent. We highly recommend Tony!

There are many services that offer cars from one part of Campania to another, and we’re so glad we chose Tony for our excursion from Sorrento to Paestum. Although he describes himself as a driver, not a guide, he taught us so much about the area during what would otherwise have been a quiet, two-hour drive. He left us to our own devices while we toured the Greek temples of Paestum and picked us up again to show us the memorial to the Allied invasion of Italy during World War II and the nearby caseificio, where we got to pet the buffalo and then eat the best fresh mozzarella we’ve ever tasted. Tony was efficient, witty, and very considerate of our needs during the trip. If you want to visit the sights of Campania but are daunted about doing the driving yourself, he’s your man.
