Famous last words ... you get what you pay for. We were excited to find an affordable trip to Capri on a private boat. The captain was good at communication and answering questions about coolers, and restaurant recommendations before our trip. The morning of our trip, he was 45 minutes late for our pick up, saying the harbormaster wouldn't let him into the port. We're easy going, not a problem, but this time wasn't made up for on the back end of the trip. We were aware of the agree upon extra cost of $200 Euro for gas, but felt held hostage by the captain, as soon as we pulled out of port, he killed the engines and demanded the money. No problem, we were planning to pay and we got it out of the way ... he didn't speak English, nor do we speak Italian, so communication was limited. Onto the boat, to say it was in rough shape is an under statement. As soon as we started underway, the black smoke billowing out of the engine was toxic, and we had to repeatedly ask for him to slow down so we weren't smoked out. The boat itself was really run down, all four corners of the hull were dinged and repaired, the deck was dirty, there were filthy rugs and a slippery yoga (?) mat that served no purpose. The online pictures didn't show the wear and tear. As promised, we headed out to Capri, stopped for a swim, and saw all of the beautiful grottos. Also promised were Prosecco, limoncello and snacks. The snacks amounted to two bags of snack size chips. Period. For eight people. Which the Captain munched on as he poured them into the bowl. No limoncello was ever offered and we got one bottle of white wine on our return to Sorrento. We had lots of our own snacks, and had brought beer and wine. Our two hour stop in Capri was super rushed, started off by no warning when we came into port, that it was time to disembark! We were all scrambling to get our shoes on, clothes on, purses, etc., for our little adventure, all the while, the dock staff were yelling at us to hurry. If we had a warning from the captain, with him telling us to prepare, it would've been super helpful, and not so stressful. We were prepared to pay the $100 Euro for arriving at the island, but conveniently, none of the the dock staff had change for our $50 and three $20, so we never got change. Annoying. Our two hours were rushed on the island as it was super crowded, three hours would've been such more enjoyable. We requested a swim after getting back on the boat, I don't think it was on the itinerary, but the Captain obliged. He gave us the bottle of white wine, and we succumbed to the black smoke as we headed back to Sorrento. Overall, the two stars, not one, are because we were on the Mediterranean, we swam, we saw Capri ... but not sure we would do it again with this boat and captain.
