Discover more about Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab

The Alabama Aquarium at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab offers an immersive journey into the aquatic ecosystems of coastal Alabama [3, 4, 11]. Formerly known as the Estuarium, this facility serves as the public outreach arm of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL), Alabama's primary marine research and education center [8, 19]. The aquarium showcases four key habitats: the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, Mobile Bay, the Barrier Islands, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico [3, 8, 12]. Visitors can explore a 10,000-square-foot exhibit hall, home to over 100 species of plants and animals [3, 14]. The Mobile-Tensaw River Delta exhibit features alligators, turtles, and gar, while the Mobile Bay exhibit displays species found near the Middle Bay Lighthouse, such as crabs, oysters, and flounder [8]. The Barrier Islands exhibit highlights shrimp and hermit crabs, and the Northern Gulf of Mexico exhibit features octopus, eels, seahorses, and sharks [8]. Don't miss the popular 7,000-gallon stingray touch pool, where you can gently interact with rays [3, 14]. Beyond the exhibits, the aquarium offers educational opportunities, including boardwalk talks and excursions led by marine scientists [5, 14, 19]. These excursions provide hands-on experiences in salt marshes, beaches, and maritime forests [5, 14]. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab itself has a rich history, dating back to 1971, and is located next to the historic Fort Gaines [8, 19].
