Discover more about Dismals Canyon

Dismals Canyon, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains near Phil Campbell, Alabama, is a unique natural wonder spanning 85 acres. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1975, this privately-owned canyon offers visitors a glimpse into a primeval world shaped by geological events over millions of years. The canyon's history stretches back nearly 10,000 years, with evidence of Paleoamerican, Chickasaw, and Cherokee inhabitants who sought shelter within its sandstone formations. Today, visitors can explore a 1.5-mile hiking trail that winds along Dismals Branch, a stream that flows through the canyon, passing by towering boulders, cascading waterfalls like Rainbow Falls and Secret Falls, and natural bridges. The trail leads through a landscape teeming with diverse plant life, including old-growth trees and a wide variety of mosses and ferns, creating a rainforest-like atmosphere. However, the canyon's most enchanting feature is the presence of 'Dismalites' (Orfelia fultoni), bioluminescent fly larvae that emit a captivating blue-green light. These glowworms, closely related to those found in Australia and New Zealand, thrive in the canyon's humid, dark environment, clinging to moss-covered walls and attracting insects with their ethereal glow. Guided night tours offer visitors the chance to witness this magical spectacle, best viewed in late spring and early fall. Dismals Canyon offers a variety of activities, including daytime hiking, night tours to see the Dismalites, and even swimming in a natural pool above Rainbow Falls during daylight hours. For those seeking a longer stay, the canyon provides camping and cabin rentals.
