Discover more about Venetian Tower of Durrës

The Venetian Tower of Durrës, locally known as Kulla Veneciane, is a captivating historical landmark in the coastal city of Durrës, Albania. Constructed in the 15th century by the Venetian Republic, who ruled over Durazzo at the time, the tower replaced an earlier Byzantine structure and served as a crucial artillery tower, defending the port and town from maritime attacks. Built with solid stone, the tower's circular shape was strategically chosen to provide all-around defensive coverage. Its design incorporated narrow slits and windows, allowing defenders to monitor approaching threats and fire upon them. The tower was once connected to the city walls, forming an integral part of the Byzantine fortress of Durrës, which was considered one of the most formidable defense structures on the Adriatic Sea's western coast. Today, the Venetian Tower stands as a symbol of resilience and cultural pride for Albanians. Following restoration efforts supported by the EU4Culture Project after damage from the 2019 earthquake, the tower has been transformed into a state-of-the-art Heritage Interpretation Center. Visitors can explore historical events and places through digital and multimedia tools, including VR headsets and dome multimedia projections. The tower also offers panoramic views of Durrës and the Adriatic Sea.
