Discover more about Tepelene

Tepelene Castle, located in the town of Tepelene, is a historical landmark with a rich and turbulent past. The castle's origins trace back to a Byzantine defensive tower in the 7th century, highlighting its strategic importance over the centuries. The Ottomans further developed the site in the 15th century after destroying the old Byzantine fortification. The castle saw its most significant transformation in the early 19th century under Ali Pasha of Tepelene, an Albanian ruler within the Ottoman Empire. Born in Tepelene in 1740, Ali Pasha was known for his military and political power. He rebuilt the castle in 1819, expanding it into a sprawling complex of 4 hectares with three entrances and three towers. Until 1820, it served as his second residence and a vital strategic stronghold. Lord Byron visited Ali Pasha in 1809 and later immortalized him in his poem *Childe Harold's Pilgrimage*. The castle's walls were constructed to conform to the natural terrain, resulting in an irregular shape. The eastern gate bears the inscription "The gate of Vezir". Inside the castle, various buildings once stood, including barracks, magazines, religious structures, and a prison. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of the ancient walls and towers, reflecting a blend of Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Vjosa River valley and distant mountain ranges. Although earthquakes and war destroyed much of the historical buildings in the early 20th century, the site remains a powerful symbol of Albania's cultural and historical heritage.
