Discover more about Castle of Kruja

Kruja Castle, or Kalaja e Krujës, stands as a powerful symbol of Albanian resilience and national identity. Nestled atop a hill in the city of Kruje, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and the Adriatic Sea. The castle's history is deeply intertwined with the Albanian people's fight for independence, particularly during the 15th century when it served as the headquarters of Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the national hero of Albania. Originally built in the 5th or 6th century, the castle has been modified and expanded throughout its history. Skanderbeg ingeniously seized the castle using a forged letter and transformed it into an impenetrable stronghold against the Ottoman forces. Under his command, the castle withstood three major sieges, becoming a symbol of Albanian defiance against a powerful empire. Today, Kruja Castle is one of the most visited historical sites in Albania. Within its walls, visitors can explore the Skanderbeg Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits detailing his life and the battles fought to protect Albanian independence. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in a traditional Ottoman-era house, provides insights into Albanian life and culture. The castle complex also includes the remains of the Sultan Mehmed Fatih mosque and the Dollma Tekke, reflecting the diverse influences that have shaped Albania's history. Exploring the castle grounds offers a captivating journey through centuries of Albanian history, courage, and cultural heritage.
