Discover more about Tower C of Castle Wall

Tower C of the Castle Wall stands as a remarkable testament to the rich history and architectural prowess of Durrës, Albania. This historical landmark, part of the larger Durrës Fortress, dates back to the Byzantine era and offers visitors a unique insight into the region's past. The tower's sturdy walls and strategic position made it an essential part of the city's defenses against various invasions throughout history. Constructed in the late 5th century AD during the rule of Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I, who was a native of Durrës, the castle and its towers were built to protect the city from naval attacks. Durrës became one of the most fortified cities on the Adriatic. The ancient walls were significantly damaged by an earthquake in 1273 and underwent extensive repairs. Later, during the Venetian era (1392-1501), the fortifications were improved with the addition of guard towers. The Ottomans also reinforced the walls during their rule, adapting them to the military technology of the time. In modern times, Tower C has undergone restoration efforts to preserve its historical value. Despite damage from a 2019 earthquake, restoration work has been carried out with international support. Visitors can explore the tower and enjoy panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea and the surrounding cityscape of Durrës. The juxtaposition of ancient stonework against the modern cityscape creates a captivating atmosphere.
