Getting There

Public Transport

From the Algiers city center, take Metro Line 1 to El Madania station. From there, transfer to bus 34 or 25 towards Bologhine. Ask the driver to be alerted when arriving at Rue de Zighara. From there, walk up Rue de Zighara to the Basilica. A single metro ticket costs approximately 50 DZD. Bus fares are around 30 DZD.

The Basilica of Notre Dame d'Afrique, or Our Lady of Africa, stands as a beacon of faith and a testament to Algeria's rich history. Construction began in 1858, driven by the growing Catholic community during French colonization, and was completed in 1872. Archbishop Charles Lavigerie envisioned a space dedicated to the Virgin Mary that would also foster reconciliation between different cultures. The basilica's location on the Bologhine hill (formerly Saint-Eugène) offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Architect Jean-Eugène Fromageau masterfully blended Neo-Byzantine, Romanesque, and Moorish architectural elements, creating a unique and awe-inspiring structure. The basilica features a dome inspired by Byzantine architecture, Moorish-influenced arches and ornaments, and stunning stained glass windows. The floor plan is also unusual, with the choir situated on the southeast instead of the east side. Inside, visitors are greeted by intricate mosaics, stained glass windows, and a serene atmosphere. A notable inscription above the altar reads in French and Arabic: “Our Lady of Africa, pray for us and for the Muslims,” reflecting the basilica's commitment to interfaith dialogue. The basilica contains 46 stained glass windows installed in the 19th century. Throughout its history, Notre Dame d'Afrique has faced challenges, including damage from bombings during World War II and the 2003 Boumerdès earthquake.
