Discover more about Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell

The Sanctuary Basilica of Our Lady of Meritxell, located in the parish of Canillo, is Andorra's most important religious site and a significant cultural landmark. The basilica is dedicated to Our Lady of Meritxell, the patron saint of Andorra, and stands as a testament to the Andorran people's faith and devotion. The sanctuary's history dates back to the 12th century when, according to legend, a shepherd found an image of the Virgin Mary in a rose bush that miraculously bloomed in winter. The original chapel, built to house the statue, was destroyed by fire in 1972, along with the Romanesque carving of the Virgin. This tragic event led to the construction of the new basilica, designed by architect Ricardo Bofill, which opened in 1976. Bofill's design blends modern and ancient styles, incorporating slate and white stone to reflect the surrounding Pyrenean landscape. The basilica features an open cloister with uncovered archways, a miracle room, and a permanent exhibition on the history and cult of Meritxell. Inside, a replica of the Romanesque carving of the Virgin is venerated, along with statues of other Andorran saints by sculptor Sergi Mas. In 2014, Pope Francis declared the Sanctuary a Minor Basilica, further solidifying its importance. The Sanctuary of Meritxell is part of the Marian Route, connecting it to other significant sanctuaries in Spain and France.
