Discover more about Historical Grand Canyon Airfield - Red Butte

Red Butte Airfield, nestled in the Kaibab National Forest, marks the spot of the Grand Canyon's first airport. Opened in 1927 by J. Parker Van Zandt and B. Russell Shaw as Scenic Airlines, Inc., the airfield quickly became a significant hub for early aviation. The site hosted aviation legends such as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, who relied on the airfield's mechanics. Despite its historical importance, the airfield was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, but is largely passed by unnoticed by Grand Canyon visitors. The current Grand Canyon National Park Airport, opened in 1967 in Tusayan, replaced the Red Butte Airfield. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-bustling airfield, including a decaying hangar, a bungalow, and a root cellar. Although the lodge burned down in the 1990s, the site offers a glimpse into the early days of aviation and the pioneering spirit that shaped the Grand Canyon's tourism. Red Butte itself is a prominent landmark, a lava-capped mesa composed of red sandstones and basalt. A short but steep trail leads to the summit, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
