Karmel Mayerling stands as a somber reminder of a scandal that shook the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Originally a hunting lodge owned by Heiligenkreuz Abbey since 1550, it was sold to Crown Prince Rudolf in 1886. He transformed it into his private retreat. However, Mayerling became infamous on January 30, 1889, when Rudolf and his lover, the Baroness Mary Vetsera, were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide.In the aftermath of the tragedy, Emperor Franz Josef I ordered the hunting lodge to be converted into a Carmelite convent. The church was designed so that the high altar would be placed directly over the location where Rudolf's deathbed had been. The convent was established with the mission of the Carmelite nuns to pray for the soul of the deceased Crown Prince.Today, Karmel Mayerling serves as both a place of worship and a memorial. Visitors can tour the church, Elisabeth Chapel, and several exhibition rooms displaying artifacts related to the tragedy, including the imperial donation chalice and depictions of the events of 1889. The surrounding park offers a tranquil space for reflection. The Carmelite nuns lead a secluded life, sustaining themselves through the modest income generated by visitor tours.
