Discover more about Fort Flémalle

Fort Flémalle, located a few kilometers southwest of Liège, is a historical site that played a crucial role in the defense of the Meuse Valley. Built under the direction of General Brialmont in the late 19th century, it formed part of a network of twelve forts designed to protect Liège. Its quadrangular shape, unique for its time, distinguishes it from other Brialmont forts. During World War I, Fort Flémalle was heavily bombarded by the German army and eventually surrendered on August 16, 1914. The Germans later improved the fort for infantry support. It continued to serve a critical function during World War II, housing over 300 soldiers before surrendering on May 16, 1940, after further aerial bombardment. The visible craters today serve as a reminder of the impact of these attacks. Today, Fort Flémalle is a museum offering guided tours and immersive experiences. Visitors can explore the underground galleries, view military artifacts, and witness a 3D reconstitution of the fort in May 1940. A virtual reality tour allows visitors to experience the fort as it was during World War II. The museum also features a collection of weapons, medical equipment, and uniforms, with a dedicated space for honoring the role of women in the American army.
