Discover more about Castle of Reinhardstein

The Castle of Reinhardstein, a striking medieval fortress, rises majestically from a rocky spur in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. Built in 1354 by Renaud de Waimes under the authorization of Duke Wenceslas of Luxembourg, the castle has a rich and storied past. It was initially designed as a military stronghold, later transforming into a hunting lodge for the Waimes family and their descendants. Over the centuries, the castle passed through various noble families, including the Metternichs, before falling into disrepair after the French Revolution. Sold to a demolition company in 1812, it seemed destined for oblivion. However, in 1965, Professor Jean Overloop, a passionate historian, rediscovered the ruins and dedicated himself to its reconstruction. Using medieval documents, he meticulously rebuilt the castle, bringing it back to its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the castle's many rooms, including the Knights' Hall, guard room, chapel, and living quarters, filled with antique furniture, weaponry, and tapestries. The tour includes an outdoor section with stunning views of the Warche valley and the highest waterfall in Belgium. The surrounding forested landscape offers excellent hiking opportunities. Reinhardstein Castle hosts various events throughout the year, including a medieval festival and a Christmas market. During the summer, the castle is adorned with floral arrangements for the Castelflora exhibition.
