MoMu - Fashion Museum Antwerp: A Showcase of Belgian Avant-Garde

MoMu – the Fashion Museum Antwerp – stands as a testament to Belgium's significant contribution to the world of fashion. Founded in 2002, MoMu's roots trace back to the 1960s when the Fashion Department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp began gaining international recognition. The museum's mission is to preserve, research, and exhibit fashion in all its forms, with a particular emphasis on Belgian contemporary fashion. The museum's collection boasts over 38,000 items, including clothing, accessories, and textiles, encompassing both historical and contemporary pieces. It is the largest collection of Belgian fashion in the world. The permanent exhibition showcases the story of avant-garde Belgian and international fashion, highlighting the collective known as the Antwerp Six, who transformed 'Belgian fashion' into a hallmark of quality from the 1980s onward. MoMu organizes two temporary exhibitions each year, alongside smaller installations in the ground-floor gallery. These exhibitions immerse visitors in the world of a designer or theme through compelling scenography. The museum also houses a vast library collection and an auditorium for lectures, conferences, and Q&A sessions. The ModeNatie building, where MoMu is located, also houses the Flanders DC for Fashion and the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
