You can take the metro to 'Rodoviária' station on Line 2 (Green Line). Once at the bus terminal, look for the tickets for buses heading to 'Petrópolis'. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. Once you arrive at the 'Petrópolis' bus station, you can walk to the museum, which is about 1.5 km away. Head northeast on 'Rua do Imperador' and continue straight until you reach the museum at 'Rua do Imperador, 417'.

Another option is to take a train from Rio de Janeiro to Petrópolis. Start at 'Estação Central do Brasil' and take a train to 'Petrópolis'. After arriving at the train station in Petrópolis, you can catch a local bus or taxi to Museu Imperial. If you choose the bus, take the one that goes toward 'Centro' and get off at 'Rua do Imperador'. The museum is a short walk from there.
