Discover more about Caneel Bay

Caneel Bay, nestled on a 170-acre peninsula on the northwest side of St. John, is more than just a scenic location; it's a place where history and natural beauty intertwine. The bay's name, derived from the Dutch word for cinnamon ('Kaneel'), hints at its past as a sugar plantation, known as Little Cinnamon Bay. In 1733, the plantation provided refuge for some of Peter Durloo's neighbors during the St. John slave insurrection. The Durloo family owned and operated the plantation for four generations. Laurance Rockefeller, captivated by the island's charm, purchased the Caneel Bay Plantation in 1952. He then donated a large portion of St. John to the U.S. government, leading to the establishment of the Virgin Islands National Park in 1956. Rockefeller developed Caneel Bay Resort with an environmentally conscious approach, ensuring the buildings blended seamlessly with the landscape. The resort operated for decades, offering guests a luxurious escape with minimal amenities to encourage immersion in nature. In 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria caused severe damage to Caneel Bay. As of August 1, 2024, Caneel Bay Beach has reopened to the public, offering access to its soft white sand and calm waters. Visitors can also see the Durloo Sugar Plantation ruins, a reminder of the area's rich history. While the resort remains closed, the National Park Service is working on a phased reopening strategy, balancing preservation with public access. Caneel Bay continues to be a place of renewal, inviting travelers to connect with nature and discover the stories etched into its landscape.
