Ulu Temburong National Park: Brunei's Green Jewel

Ulu Temburong National Park, often called the 'Green Jewel of Brunei,' is a remarkable 50,000-hectare protected rainforest in the Temburong District. Established in 1991, it showcases Brunei's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Unlike other parts of Borneo, Brunei's oil wealth has allowed it to protect its rainforests from deforestation. The park's remote location and steep terrain have helped maintain its rich biodiversity. It's part of the Heart of Borneo conservation agreement between Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia, aimed at protecting this vital ecosystem. Visitors can explore a network of forest trails and plank walkways that provide access to the heart of the jungle. The highlight for many is the Canopy Walkway, reached after a trek from the park HQ. This walkway offers a unique opportunity to observe the rainforest's diverse treetop ecosystem from 60 meters above the forest floor. Adventure options include zip-lining, rafting, forest night walks and jungle trekking. For a more relaxing experience, try river tubing or a traditional 'pelian' fish massage in a waterfall's natural pool. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including various bird species and perhaps even a glimpse of a proboscis monkey.
