Parc Urbain Bangr Weoogo: An Oasis of Nature in Ouagadougou

Parc Urbain Bangr Weoogo, whose name translates to "the urban park of the forest of knowledge" in Moore, is a cherished green space in Ouagadougou. Spanning 2.63 square kilometers, the park's history is as rich as its biodiversity. Before the French colonial era, the area was a sacred forest belonging to the Mossi chiefs, used for traditional initiations and as a refuge. Disregarding its local significance, the French colonists established it as a park in the 1930s.In 1985, the park underwent renovations, and in January 2001, it was officially renamed Parc Urbain Bangr Weoogo. Today, it serves as a popular recreational area for locals and tourists alike, offering a respite from the city's hustle and bustle. Visitors can explore well-maintained walking trails, discover hidden spots for quiet contemplation, and enjoy the diverse flora and fauna.The park also features a small zoo that houses injured or non-releasable animals. While some sports facilities exist, they may not be well-maintained. The park's natural environment provides a refreshing contrast to the urban landscape, making it an ideal place for jogging, picnics, and leisurely strolls.
