Discover more about Bair Island Wildlife Refuge & Trail

Bair Island Wildlife Refuge, located in Redwood City, California, is a hidden gem within the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This expansive 3,000-acre marshland comprises Inner, Middle, and Outer islands, offering a serene retreat for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Historically, Bair Island was a tidal salt marsh, later diked for farming, grazing, and salt production in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A large-scale residential development was proposed in the 1980s but was defeated by a citizen referendum. The Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) purchased the property in 1996, adding it to the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge. Restoration efforts have transformed much of the area back into tidal wetlands, creating a thriving habitat for a variety of species. Today, Bair Island is an important ecological wetland, providing critical habitat for a variety of species, including the endangered Ridgway's rail and the salt marsh harvest mouse. It also serves as a vital stop for birds along the Pacific Flyway. Visitors can explore the refuge via flat, wide trails suitable for hiking and biking, offering stunning views of the bay, the East Bay Hills, and Mount Diablo. Birdwatchers will delight in the abundance of waterfowl and shorebirds, including Ruddy Ducks, Northern Shovelers, and White-Tailed Kites. Harbor seals are also frequently spotted in the sloughs. The refuge is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, offering a peaceful escape and a chance to witness the ongoing restoration of this vital ecosystem.
